I marveled at God's decree, and God has power

over whatever He wills; none can overpower God.

He decreed on the day of Badr that we should meet a people

who transgressed; the path of transgression leads people astray.

They had mustered and called to arms those near them

from among the people, until their host grew numerous.

And they marched toward us, seeking none but us:

Kaʿb in its entirety, all together, and ʿAmir.

    لَهُ معقلٌ منهُمْ غَزِيرٌ وَنَاصِرُ

    Among us was God's Messenger, with the Aws around him;

in them he had a mighty stronghold and a defender.

And the host of Banu al-Najjar, beneath his banner,

marched in gleaming mail, with dust rising [probable reading].

When we met them, each man fighting

for his comrades, fearless in spirit and steadfast,

we bore witness that there is no Lord other than God,

and that God's Messenger prevails through the truth.

And bright, light blades had been unsheathed, as though they were

firebrands made to gleam before your eyes by one who brandished them.

    وكانَ يُلاقي الحَيْنَ مَنْ هُوَ فاجرُ

    With them we destroyed their host, and they scattered;

and whoever was wicked met his doom.

Then Abu Jahl was flung down, slain upon his face,

and ʿUtbah they had left lying fallen.

Shaybah and the Taymi, too, they left in the fray,

and every one of them disbelieved in the Possessor of the Throne.

So they became fuel for the Fire in its abode,

and every hardened disbeliever is bound for Hell.

It blazes over them, its heat already stoked

with chunks of iron and stones by a stoker.

And God's Messenger had said, 'Come forward!'

Then they turned away: 'You are nothing but a sorcerer.'

    وَلَيْسَ لأَمرٍ حَمَّةُ اللهُ زاجِرُ

    for a purpose by which God willed that they should perish;

and none can avert a decree God ordained [wording uncertain].
