And a weeping woman at Hira grieves in tears,
Weeping bitterly, she grieves with crying,
and beats her own cheek and necklace-bearing neck,
And strikes her cheek and necklace.
علىover هالِكٍone who has died بَعْدَafter النَّبيّthe Prophet مُحمَّدٍMuhammad
وَلَوَand if عَلِمَتْshe knew لَمْdid not تَبْكِweep إِلاّexcept محمَّداMuhammad
over one who died after the Prophet Muhammad;
Over the death of the Prophet Muhammad,
had she known, she would have wept for Muhammad alone.
Had she known, she would have wept only for Muhammad.
فُجعْناwe were bereaved بخَيْرِof the best النّاسِpeople حَيّاًliving وَميِّتاًand dead
وأدْناهُand the nearest of them مِنْto رَبِّthe Lord البَرِيَّةof creation مِقْعَداin station
We were bereaved of the best of people, living and dead,
We were afflicted by the best of people, alive and dead,
and the nearest of them in station to the Lord of creation,
And we brought him near the Lord of all creation on a seat.
وأفْظَعِهِمْand the most grievous of them فَقْداًin loss علىfor كُلِّevery مُسْلِمٍMuslim
وأعْظَمِهمْand the greatest of them فيamong النّاسِpeople كُلِّهمُall of them يَداin generosity (literally, hand)
and the one whose loss was most grievous to every Muslim,
And the most dreadful loss to every Muslim,
and the most open-handed among all people.
And the greatest among all people in every way.
إذاwhen كانwas منْهُfrom him القولُspeech كانwas مُوَفَّقاًrightly guided
وإنْand if كانَhe was حيّاًalive كانhe was نوراًa light مجدَّداrenewed
Whenever speech came from him, it was rightly guided;
If the word was from him, it was divinely guided,
and while he lived, he was a light renewed.
And had he lived, he would be an ever-renewing light.
لقدindeed وَرِثَتْinherited أخلاقُهُhis character المَجْدَglory والتقىand piety
فلمso did not تتَلْقَهُyou encounter him إلاّexcept رشيداًrightly guided ومُرْشِداand guiding others
Indeed, his character inherited glory and piety,
Indeed, his virtues inherited glory and piety,
so you encountered him only rightly guided and guiding others.
None received them except the rightly-guided guide.
