We were stirred when remembrance overtook us,

and great desires arose within us.

They caught up with us while we were at Thumayl,

as the camel train catches up with its leader.

Then my companions' eyes shimmered with teardrops

briefly; then their downward flow grew relentless.

So the eye of our most steadfast man kept streaming,

streaming, its later gushes racing forth,

like scant water in a leaking waterskin,

with a cord drawn tight over its split.

We had been neighbors in the ravines of Najd,

then separation became certain and neighborliness ended.

My gaze rose that morning at Uthayfiyat,

though longing sometimes quiets, when they descended,

toward the howdah-caravan of a sister of Banu Ghifar,

at Kaba, where al-Aqar pressed close against it.

They swayed the laden camels, heading upland

toward Ukkash, for the low ground had dried.

They steered the riding camels toward the Daughters of Na'sh,

while we turned away from their setting-places.

    Stars inclining toward stars,

as foster she-camels return to a spring-born calf.

So I said—and that was little enough from me for them—

May the rains water the land where they have settled.

My companions and I saw, at Khunasirat,

laden camels after the day had risen high.

We groaned upon the saddles, while there stretched

before the pale camels' forelegs a deadly, barren waste.

As though the middles of our camel-saddles

were little sons of ours whom we played with.

There is no blame in my glance; yet

may abundant rains water glances such as mine.

My heart, from yearning for them, almost—

and from prolonged longing—is swept away.

It keeps fluttering, hemmed in on either side,

like a falcon fluttering, held fast by its tether.

Among the tribe whom I saw was a tender young woman,

shy of intimacy, yet companionable and chaste.

Cool along her rows of teeth, as though her mouth,

shortly after sleep, were aged, heady wine.

When the pillow yields beneath her and she leans

with such a sway—it is death or peril.

Your upper arms are drawn back from her in languor,

when she embraces and yielding softness bends her.

Her husband almost drinks her in when

breathlessness greets her amid her heady fragrance:

a scent by which the inward parts revive,

and a love neither sold nor lent.

Because of her, you see your cousin, come morning,

clear in complexion, with no dust upon him,

like an ivory bracelet that has touched fragrant musk,

    which merchants bring from Yemen.

When the caller calls, he spends the night weeping,

in dread of dawn—if only dread could help.

He wishes another night were added to the night,

and no day were ever created for him.

He holds back the breath of deep sighs until

it finds a resting place beside the heart's artery.

As though a yellow ingot had been rubbed

over her; then the veil was wound around it.

Her bedmate spends the night amid coquettish grace

and charm, with no lull in its outpouring.
