The companions have departed; my heart has no restraint.

Nor can I rely on the travelers leaving at dawn.

As for them, they are enemies; we do not speak to them.

But she is my friend; for her are longing and madness.

It was as though, the day the two camel-drivers urged her onward

toward al-Iwanah, I had been felled by plague.

The day I saddled up with my saddle, without my saddle-pad,

my heart was dismayed, preoccupied with separation.

Then I mounted my worn-out beast to set it moving

after the laden camels departing at dawn, though it was hobbled.

Then an uncontrollable tear rushed forth, driven

by water, and the rim within its eyelid tilted with it.

So I said: Why have the camp's laden camels vanished?

Has my sight grown dim, or has the ghoul snatched them away?

At times they fade from view, and I weep; then they are lifted

by the midmorning mirage and the huge, swift-striding she-camels.

    أَظلالُهُنَ لِأَيديهِنَّ تَنعيلُ

    Swift-striding, they bear them onward, trembling-jawed and powerfully built;

their shadows serve as sandals for their forefeet.

The camel-drivers chant loudly along their tracks,

and the mirage trots like a mule over the rugged ridges.

Until, when the pale sun settled before them

and the heat blazed, they said: Take your midday rest!

They entered a valley where the doves' cooing

sounded like the lament of bereaved Nabataeans.

Nothing of my liver was left for me to live by,

by long yearning and the fair, full-hipped women.

Each broad-thighed woman in her two cloaks is distracted

from the camp's needs by henna and the staining of hands and feet.

One whose twin sashes sway whenever she turns,

while the anklets do not move loosely around her calves.

The outer edges of her back and the hollow of her throat are adorned

by combed hair, steeped in musk once, then steeped again.

She twists it into locks with curling ends,

    like drooping grape-clusters of al-Qura.

Slim where her cloak lies, full-bodied in her swaying,

smooth of back and belly, a long-necked beauty.

As though between her collarbones and her throat's hollow

lay embers interspersed with stars of night.

    سُقمٌ لِمَن أَسقَمَت داءٌ عَقابيلُ

    Her saliva cures consumption and pleurisy;

yet she is sickness to those she sickens, disease with lingering after-effects.

Thirst is quenched, wherever her bedfellow turns with her,

after sleep, by her saliva and kissing.

They would yearn for her, even if in haste—

the bereaved gray-haired in a ravine of Mecca.

She captures hearts: among her visitors is one wasting away,

counting his life's last days, and another slain.

As though her smile, one day when she smiles,

were lightning whose clouds are white and wispy.

As though it were blossoms brought by gatherers,

freshly chosen, sweet-scented, wet with dew.

As though, when her limbs slip out of her shift, she were

an ingot undiminished by the weights.

Or a rain-cloud from which the east wind has swept dust,

until its clear gleam and crowning rim appeared.

Or an egg among hard ridges, turned over

with both shoulders by a soft-feathered, easily startled ostrich.

He fears the dew, so turns his vulnerable parts toward it,

until he rises to meet the sun's first rim.

Or a cow of the wild cattle of the sands, kept apart

from her companion by a white-cheeked, kohl-eyed calf,

on a stretch of Naqa al-'Azzaf, inhabited

by the jinn of the sand-ridge and wide-eyed cows with calves.

    إِنَّ المُسَيكينَ إِن جاوَزتِ مَأكولُ

    Her soul said for his sake: Stay at his birthplace;

the poor little one will be eaten if you leave.

Her heart is troubled by terrors that frighten it,

and her flesh is wasted by the intensity of her fear.

She keeps returning to him with an undivided heart,

and a milk-flow the ducts have not depleted.

Until a ranging predator seized her firstborn on the open plain—

    lean, wide-jawed and sleek.

Its jaw-muscles were drawn tight at every turn

to either side, and its muzzle tapered smoothly.

No soft fur remained, after its shed hairs had flown away,

on the ridge of its back, save scattered tufts.

As though between its eyes and its shoulder-tuft

lay a cloth, so stained was it in the blood of men.

Like a spear quivering in both hands, from which extends

a straight shaft bearing a broad, deadly point.

It traverses the wastes, hollow after hollow; its watering place

is in old, weathered pools atop rugged high ground.

When he gave his first cry and made her hear it,

with two miles, or one, stretching between them,

the tender buttercup shoots nearly choked her,

and watery froth lay in clumps between her jaws.

She scatters lavender with swift-moving cloven hooves,

whose impact, when they strike, is only a fleeting touch.

Until she reached the poor one's resting place, scratching through it,

and around her lay fragments, torn shreds from her.

as a young maiden searches for a bracelet where she plays,

with her two hands patterned in henna.
