لَمْdid not تَقُلْyou say ليto me مِنَfrom النَّوَىdistance; separation أَيْنَwhere أَنْتَاyou
لَمْ تَقُلْ لي مِنَ النَّوَى أَيْنَ أَنْتَا
وَلِأَيٍّand in whom هُناكَthere أَنْتَyou أَمِنْتَاyou trusted؟
وَلِأَيٍّ هُناكَ أَنْتَ أَمِنْتَا؟
You have not told me, from afar, where you are,
And in whom have you placed your trust there?
بِنْتَyou departed عَنْfrom عَيْنِناour sight بَعِيدًاfar away فَخَبِّرْso tell
بِنْتَ عَنْ عَيْنِنا بَعِيدًا فَخَبِّرْ
"فَوْقَabove عَيْنٍan eye "مُشْتاقَةyearning : أَيْنَwhere بِنْتَاyou departed ؟
"فَوْقَ عَيْنٍ "مُشْتاقَة : أَيْنَ بِنْتَا ؟
You departed far from our sight; so tell—
Above a yearning eye: where have you gone?
أَنْتَyou كَمْhow many صُنْتَyou safeguarded لِلْحَياةِfor life وُعُودًاpromises
أَنْتَ كَمْ صُنْتَ لِلْحَياةِ وُعُودًا
أَخْلَفَتْهَاit broke them ، فَضَاعَso was lost ماwhat كُنْتَyou had صُنْتَاyou safeguarded !
أَخْلَفَتْهَا ، فَضَاعَ ما كُنْتَ صُنْتَا !
How many promises you safeguarded for life—
It broke them, so what you had safeguarded was lost!
إِنَّindeed فيin الحَيِّthe neighborhood يابْنَO son of خَالِيَmy maternal uncle حَيًّاa living person
إِنَّ في الحَيِّ يابْنَ خَالِيَ حَيًّا
طَالَماfor so long فِيin جَنَانِهِhis heart قَدْindeed سَكَنْتَاyou dwelt !
طَالَما فِي جَنَانِهِ قَدْ سَكَنْتَا !
Indeed, in the neighborhood, O son of my maternal uncle, there is someone alive,
In whose heart you have long dwelt!
أَنْتَyou فِيin البَالِthe mind لاnot إخالُكَI think you تَنْأَىyou are distant
أَنْتَ فِي البَالِ لا إخالُكَ تَنْأَى
وسَتَبْقَىand you will remain عَلَىthroughout المَدَىtime to come حَيْثُwhere كُنْتَاyou were ... !
وسَتَبْقَى عَلَى المَدَى حَيْثُ كُنْتَا ... !
You are in my thoughts; I do not think you are far away,
And you will remain for all time where you were!
