إِنَّindeed الكَرامَةَdignity ماnot زالَتْhas ceased بِمِفْتاحِin a key
فيin بابِthe door بَيْتٍa house لَناof ours فيin الشَّيْخِSheikh جَرَّاحِJarrah
Indeed, dignity still rests in a key
in the door of a house of ours in Sheikh Jarrah.
فَإِنْfor if خَلاbecame empty حَيُّناour neighborhood مِنْof حَيِّناour living people وغَدَتْand became
قُدْسُJerusalem العُرُوبَةِArab identity مِنَّاof us دَارَa house أَشْبَاحِghosts
For if our neighborhood is emptied of our living people, and
Arab Jerusalem becomes, bereft of us, a house of ghosts,
فَفيthen in غَدٍa tomorrow بَعْدَناafter us لاno مَنْone who يُرَجِّعُهُbrings it back
مِنْfrom كَفِّthe hand وَغْدٍa scoundrel وَلاnor مِنْfrom نَابِthe fang نَبَّاحِa barker
then, in a tomorrow after us, no one will bring it back
from a scoundrel's hand, nor from a barker's fang.
ماnot زَالَhas ceased يَحْفَظُناprotects us بَابٌa door نَلُوذُwe seek refuge بِهِat it
ولَيْسَand does not يَبْقَىremain لَناours مِنْfrom غَيْرِother than مِفْتاحِa key !!!
A door where we seek refuge still protects us,
and it will not remain ours without a key.
