راكَI see you ، إذاwhen اقْتَرَبْتُI draw near ، تَصُدُّyou turn away عَنِّيfrom me
كَأَنَّاas though we لَسْتُI am not مِنْكَof you ولَسْتَand you are not مِنِّيof me
I see you turn away from me whenever I draw near.
When I draw near, you turn away from me
As though I were not of you, and you were not of me.
As if I am not yours and you are not mine
وقَدْand indeed أَحْسَنْتُI thought well فيكَof you الظَّنَّthe opinion عُمْرًاa lifetime
فكَيْفَso how يَكُونُit is رَدُّكَyour response سُوْءَill ظَنِّopinion؟!
And I have thought well of you all my life;
Yet I thought well of you for a lifetime
How, then, can your response be mistrust?
How then can your rejection be ill thought from me?!
وأَنْتَand you عَرَفْتَyou have known قَدْرَكَyour worth فيin فُؤاديmy heart
وأَنِّيand that I تَحْتَunder أَمْرِكَyour command دُوْنَwithout مَنِّreminding of favors
And you have known your worth within my heart,
You knew your worth in my heart
And that I am at your command, without holding favors over you.
And that I am under your command, second to none
وَهَبْتُكَI gave you أَحْرُفِيmy letters فيin الشِّعْرِpoetry وَرْدًاroses
وفيand in الإِبْداعِcreativity : عَنْكَfrom you أَخَذْتُI took فَنِّيmy art
I gave you my letters as roses in verse,
I made my poetry for you a string of pearls
And in creativity, I drew my art from you.
And from you I took my art
ومِنْand from عَيْنَيْكَyour eyes أَنْظِمْI string عِقْدَnecklace شِعْريmy verse
وفيand in عَيْنَيْكَyour eyes أَجْمَلُthe loveliest ماwhat أُغَنِّيI sing
And from your eyes I string the necklace of my verse,
From your eyes I string the necklace of my poetry
And in your eyes is the loveliest of what I sing.
In your eyes lies the most beautiful of my songs
تَزِيدُyou increase الصَّدَّthe rejection عَنِّيfrom me دُونَwithout ذَنْبٍa fault
وتَنْسُبُهُand you attribute it إِلَيَّto me مَعَwith التَّجَنِّيunjust accusations
You turn away from me ever more, though I have done no wrong,
You shun me without a fault
And you attribute it to me, accusing me unjustly.
And attribute it to me despite my innocence
وتَهْجُرُنِيand you abandon me وتُمْعِنُand you persist فِيin التَّخَلِّيabandonment
وماand not لبَّيْتَyou answered لِيfor me يَوْمًاever : "أَعِنِّيhelp me!"
And you abandon me and persist in forsaking me,
You abandon me and persist in turning away
And never once have you answered my plea: 'Help me!'
Yet never have you answered my call for "Help me!"
تَعالَcome إِلَيَّto me وَاحْكُمْand rule فيwithin ضُلُوعِيmy ribs
وخُذْand take ماwhatever شِئْتَyou wish مِنْof خَمْرِيmy wine ودَنِّيand my wine jar
Come to me, and rule within my ribs,
Come to me and judge my ribs
And take whatever you wish of my wine and my wine jar.
Take whatever you wish of my wine and my closeness

I want your approval before death's mercy
So that God may be pleased with me on the Day of Gathering.
So that God may be pleased with me on Resurrection Day!
