    And I have a direction of prayer—Bab al-Amud—and a kiss,

which I offer from the wall to my kin in Jerusalem.

Forbidden on its stairs is every footstep

tainted by invasion, abhorrent in its trampling!

I shall pray against all the invaders and their tread,

until God one day turns back the footsteps of defilement!

My greetings to Jerusalem of peace and her people,

and from me, for her, what remains of my soul!

And there must be a day that is a joy to meet,

that makes the paths of tears forget whatever misery there was!
