Your beauty called me among those it called.

So I answered it, swift and obedient.

I mustered for it, from among passion's slaves,

thirsty, driven away from water, hungry—

emotions from which the years had not nurtured

    hope, nor revived any desire.

They flung themselves upon the edges of the lips,

    bewildered, syllable by syllable.

And flashed as a gleam—may you be spared youthful passion—

and turned to ashes, never to shine again.

O my lady, how delicate the veil is!

It arouses curiosity—and how marvelous it is!

Indeed, I am bewildered: which of the two temptations

should I resist—your radiance or the face veil?
