    O Umm Sa'd, the nights are ever-changing,

Strange, and what they conceal is stranger still.

They gather us as herds meet, roaming

Toward the pool—one herd of gazelles and another.

Then they scatter us, as though there had never been

A resting place and a playground for us with them.

    لكل ما يُشْرِقُ فيه مَغْرِب

    O Umm Sa'd, the nights are a celestial sphere;

For all that rises within it, there is a setting.

Yesterday, as today, a home sheltered us,

From you came family and welcome for us there.

There, your sincerity and generosity delighted us,

And the sweet, delightful, pleasant evening talk.

So do you think it will bring us together tomorrow,

Or will we depart without meeting?

O Umm Sa'd, if our home lies far away,

Then our shared memories draw us close.
