O memories, muster yourselves in bands,

That encompass the imagination and fill the horizon.

And ready yourselves in throngs to furnish me

With pure sorrow, terror, and anxiety.

Shake the great door I fasten shut upon myself,

And force your way through the door that has closed.

Into the depths of night pour

Such desolation as would frighten the dusk.

And the wind—let it, when it whistles

In the house, overwhelm those within with fear.

Let the children, terrified by sorrow,

Ask one another: who was it that knocked?

And let the grown-ups see a chimney

Within it, yet find nothing burning.

And sleep—parched by the terror of visions,

Or drowned in their blood—return it,

So that, from what you breathe upon it, it returns

    A monstrosity—neither sleep nor sleeplessness.

And dawn—return it to its smiling mouth,

    Choking and stifled with tears.

    Then reveal, from every corner,

That brow and his cheerful face.

Until, when late afternoon is half-spent over him,

Then curl within his spine as twilight.

Then pour the spatter of blood upon him,

Then send forth fragrance from its scent.

And tear yourselves into bloodstained pieces,

That suck clotted blood from his spatter,

As though within them the spine were sealed

With its wounds, and the chest torn open.

O memories, embody yourselves in a body

Tender with youth, and be fragrant in character:

    ضَحْيانَ : لا صَلَفاً ، ولا مَلَقا

    Naked: no deceit and no rancor;

Sunlit: no arrogance and no flattery.

You have left out, of every fleeting thought,

No pattern, nor any sequence of a faint sound.

Then startle me at every moment

With whatever among them afflicts me with distress.

O memories, all of you burning pangs,

That trample the heart and set the pupils ablaze.

Who will give me poetry that creates sorrow

For people, leaving them helpless before what it has created?

It is a crimson image of my sorrow

That bloodies the reed pen and terrifies the paper.

So those who ignored a weary man may see

Him grief-stricken—how he endures burning pangs.

Who will give me phantoms that visit me in turn,

With sorrow for my morning and evening draught?

Linked in succession: whenever they find

    A gap among them, they cast links into it;

    Gathering every passing thought,

Of times still fresh and times grown worn.

What was hidden like the grave

They reveal it, bursting forth like a star,

    Joyful and dejected and blended

    With both, united and divided.

Who will give me these, as though they were a person

Who tells of himself whenever he speaks?

Who will give me specters beneath whose weight I stagger,

Shuffling like a prisoner caught in his fetter?

Until, when they vanish, an apparition appears,

Sweet, almost sending me flying with giddy delight.

At times we go together in thirst

Born of them, and at times we draw abundant water.

One day, in the depths of the house, we are inflamed

With rage by a wrathful fate that kindles rage.

And for a moment we explore a height

Among Lebanon's uplands, and a slippery slope.

Who will give me these, that haunt their reader

With fear, just as they haunt me with fear,

And, as with me, make his life murky,

And, as with me, block the roads around him?

Who will give me poetry that creates burning pangs

That trample the heart and set the pupils ablaze,

To show them the two hearts that had clung together,

Twins—how they were when they parted,

And when, with death between them, the two

Stretched forth their necks and embraced,

And asked each other what harm it would do to slip into

One shroud together and cling to its cord?

Until, when the more ardent of the two retained

A breath of life, and his companion gave up his last breath,

And fate flung dust into his face,

Having filled a platter for everyone who parts,

And the world spread out before his gaze,

Until he thought its wide expanses a tunnel,

And their entire reckoning was over,

What debt was unbound, and what was closed,

He clapped his hands, as though a return

For his companion were what he hoped for through his clapping,

And as though he were giving his brother blood,

If his brother choked on his tears,

And as though the tomb had split open for him

With "May the clouds tend his tomb and water it."
