O Abu Nazim, your prison is my prison,

and I am of you just as you are of me.

And in affection I am of you, where a person's

    knowledge and conjecture are alike.

I am a vein in your living, pulsing body,

and a glimmer of your jealously cherished treasure.

O son of proud men, of every man who sacrificed

    a youth like a lush, song-filled garden.

They ordained the law of dissolving into the peo-

-ple, and died upon the whetstone's touchstone.

O son of proud men, your path is the path

of the proud: fearsome in its passes, exhausting.

From the remnants of the victims' blood upon it

    comes a star's gleam in pitch-black darkness.

    Like a torrent's mouth, where

wave drives wave and crushes the hesitant.

You walked it unafraid, though every span

within it, in its desolation, frightens and deters.

O fosterling of prisons, not an adopted son

who disowned his nurturer and his adopter.

O gentle when drawing water, and generous

when sharing drink, and creative when singing.

O generous with your life, who knows

that glory, like time, is bounded by no age.

O melter of sixty years, which nights

do you now preserve, and which do you spend away?

What a precious treasure, what a gift,

like sunlight, unclouded by reminders of favors!

O son of withered skin and hollow bone,

like a sword's edge in a tattered sheath.

Pride itself takes pride that a lump of flesh

has wrapped a confident, untroubled heart.

O affliction's match, you mesh with the engulfing surge

of it, as one tooth meshes with another.

He plants goodness in souls, and it is harvested,

and is repaid with evil for it, so he reaps.

O Abu Nazim, the course of manly exploi-

-ts is a race: one leads, another follows.

Your fathers bequeathed you what they were bequeathed

by forefathers, as branches inherit from a bough:

plunging into hardship unleashed to uphold a right,

and watchful waiting for a tormentor, undeterred,

and endurance through the hell of calamities,

and savoring in them an Eden's paradise,

and a life below subsistence, in which the richness

of the soul is the longing one's cherished wish.

Here is immortal glory, not pretensions,

offspring of a hurried day that perishes and destroys.

O son of the aware, when the aware were few,

eloquent, articulate on the day of feigned muteness.

They rose in darkness as the light of dawn,

and poured upon barren ground like rain from clouds.

O son of proud men, your path is not the pa-

-th of the fainthearted, exhausted and weak.

They bear burdens unwillingly, with the twisting gait

of a lame man walking rough ground in the dark.

O son of proud men, blessed are you, a ste-

-m unyielding to prods and rugged.

Storms fall in love with sturdy trees,

    and overlook tender, supple shoots.

The blood-price of those at ease in cowardice and abasement

is the torment and imprisonment you endure.

Harm is born where a free man is born,

while over a fool spreads a canopy of safety.

The reckoning will not be lost between ugliness

and beauty, or between praise and curses.

Meteors and missiles are watched, and recorded

are horses' pedigrees, thoroughbreds and crossbreeds.

And adversity's turns push away and draw near.

And greetings to your companions in the ra-

-ce of victory, every peer and equal.

O Abu Nazim, we are the caravan singers

of the generation, guiding its path and singing.

Partners in one aim, we begin the journey,

knowing its terrors, and follow on.

O Abu Nazim, we are a shield

on the day a breastplate is sought—and what a shield!

Across it are holes from spear upon spear,

deeply wounded by blows and thrusts.

We, when pleasures are purchased for a price,

with the heart's blood buy what brings suffering.

All our days we demolish what tyrants have built,

and suffer what they demolish, then rebuild.

    When calamities darken, we spread

candles of hope through despairing gloom.

O Abu Nazim, we are the gentlest of people

by nature, and worshippers of art.

We, as we flow into every soul,

are like drowsiness stealing from every eyelid.

How strange that we should be subjected to abasement, and

shunned, and sold at a loss.

How strange that we endure the rule of injustice

and suffer the wrongdoer's arbitrary power.

O Abu Nazim, many a captive,

if ransomed, holds release for another captive.

An ember of awareness has deprived us of life,

    a heart's blazing and a mind's flashing.

They, they are life, were it not for a system

ordained for nothing but the jungle in its savagery.

The utmost hardship is that a free man be burdened

with a servitude ordained for a born slave.

O Abu Nazim, how many a thought has occurred

and brought a thought that had not occurred!

Here I am, the man you knew: free, plain

of speech, putting forward what I hold, and meaning it.

No dissembler, nor one concealing a draught

while sipping froth; nor do I like veiled speech.

I do not care what a loom has woven upon it,

or what commentaries have embroidered on a text.

O Abu Nazim, paired is the lowering

of every lofty one with the raising of the lowly.

Patience has run dry, O son of a sea of learning,

roaring in its waves, ringing with pride.

Are singers scattered, with no nest,

while mute birds find shelter in nests?

Are we the ones uprooted from the ear-

-th watered with our blood each generation?

With victims falling along every path,

and graves crying out in every corner?

Are we the ones driven from the dwelling,

when we protect its caravan women?

Are we the ones over whom the wh-

-ip rises at the suspicions of the suspicious?

Whose whip? The whip of every well-fed brute,

foul in origin, rotten in roots.

Do the sons of your recent yesterday overthro-

-w the last remnant of venerable pride?

The best wombs did not bear them, nor

did they grow, like you, in the finest lap and embrace.

O brother of the people in ease and hardship,

one of them, in joy and sorrow.

All your life you have never ceased, despite

your poverty, to give them what nurtures and enriches.

The people's bounty is only their excessive clinging

to calamities, as wine clings to a cask.

Whenever they groan, they sedate them; yet there may worsen

a patient's illness so long as he does not groan.

Is it from them that the conscripts come, and from them

every bulwark and fortress on the day of defense?

Yet throughout time they are prey to a crown

for a misguided colonel, and a staff officer's star.

O Abu Nazim, your prison is my prison,

and my wasting comes from the anguish that exhausts you.

It stings my soul that I am not equal to the task

of warding calamities off you and me.

O son of my affection, a prison's captive is not far

from a captive of exile, dependent on favor.

    Yet circumstances reveal a difference:

many an ugliness becomes a mirror of beauty.

O Abu Nazim, if you are told of me,

it is of my enemy's good fortune and my friend's anguish:

a bitter laugh bares my teeth,

and a wiped trace of a tear lies upon my sleeve.

The heart is squeezed beneath the pressure of cares,

    ferocious, with crooked, hooked claws.

O Abu Nazim, many a brave man

was brought to death by the stigma of cowardice.

Here I am seeking death, with a soul

I have not betrayed, and a resolve that has not betrayed me,

for no reason save that death,

amid the clash of men, turned away from me.

One sigh was shattered upon another's edge,

and upon its edge my song was shattered.

And if I have recovered it, it is because

I find in you a spur to singing.

O Abu Nazim, your prison is my prison,

and I am of you just as you are of me.
