My master, you—O truth and dignity,

    And pride, generosity, and eminence—

Scattered through the air as a possession shared by all,

In which earth's dust and open sky stand equal.

All we can offer you is love,

And reverence, a solemn pause, and a bow,

    And reflection on benefactors—when good

Is done, and when recompense is ill bestowed.

    O earth-clinging one—you and

    It: prostration, blessing, and growth.

O gentle one who twisted the rabid lion's

Tail, so that its howling fell silent.

O ray of prophethood, sought for guidance

By the earth, sent forth by heaven.

O scion of the two dawns, Buddha and Confucius,

Through whom their radiance gives light.

O merciful one who gathered hearts around an ember

Of love, so that rancor melted away.

And a nation united, blunting oppression's weapon,

Though it was gentle and unarmed.

O leader who took the destitute as brothers,

And the poor gathered around him, enfolding him.

    O herald of gladness—never did

Affliction or hardship silence your laughter.

    O star from which receded

    A dust-gray halo of misery.

And the sword bent, violence withdrew, and freed

Were necks, with no blood spilled in vain.

You told the hundreds of millions, 'Be something,'

And they were—the best thing one could wish for.

There grew in the wilderness of misery and humiliation,

In the East, a lush oasis.

And watered with dew—the dew of goodness and mercy

    And dignity—was barren soil.

Then Delhi called Beijing, and Beijing answered,

And a call from there answered the call.

Then here resounded—though not yet deafening the ear—

    Echoes in the advancing East.

You are not the wondrous magician, as they said,

    But will and resolve.

And sure to work miracles are conscience,

    Purity, substance, and clarity.

You are not the wondrous magician, but

Destiny whose promised hour has come, and fate.

You were therein the conscience of those millions,

Who awoke, and from whom the veil fell away,

And a faithful guardian of their great mission,

And the time had come to impose it and fulfill it.

O fair of heart—proud of what lies hidden

Within it is your radiant conscience.

Gandhi preserved the blood of the multitudes, and shielded

India from the ravages of a savage war.

And protected birds and grazing livestock from slaughter,

And a merciful law took hold.

Is it his sanctuary, then, over which flow

    Red stains of his blood?

O East, within you still linger passions

That have grown unruly, and maladies still remain.

And peace upon the prophet, whom they endowed

With a spirit of their own—the prophets.
