My brother Bêkes—death lies in wait,

and here we are, a loan to be reclaimed.

My brother Bêkes, O lamp that has gone out,

and O star whose absence is felt in the darkness.

And O prey of a “society,” worse off than

    a victim who writhed between a lion’s jaws;

and O you who reaped from noble crops

harvests of grief, harm, and envy.

And O prey to hatred—the hatred of wolves

toward a grazing lamb that had not been hunted.

    “Without anyone”—the genius’s lot:

he understands people, while no one understands him.

“Without anyone,” save the green mountains,

and imagination’s inspiration, and eternity’s silence.

“Without anyone,” O radiance of a nation

that called out to reunite its scattered ranks,

that charges with a sword of many edges:

when one of its edges dulls, another is renewed.

And the keen edge of your brilliant mind was

the best of troops, and the best of arms.

It grew notched in the heat of struggle,

and fragments, now missed, were gathered for it.

They will live on as laurels upon a rebel,

and shame upon one who meekly sat idle,

and disgrace upon a trader in refuse,

    while in his hand so precious a treasure lay unsold;

and upon one blind in conscience, who counts the man of letters

as zero—though beside him, zero counts as a number.

    “Without anyone,” O genius,

and you are everyone, and you are the One.
