Is there no power that can repel injustices,

and revive a creature asleep in humiliation?

Are there no eyes to look upon the people, plunging

into destitution's mire, with a merciful gaze?

before their eyes—or are those a dreamer's tangled dreams?

a ruler's hand from delivering decisive judgments.

    to manage it while recklessly committing crimes;

nor did He intend its yield to be

the misery of the oppressed and the oppressor's comfort.

And a more painful wound than this unfair exchange

    is a master's stupidity and a servant's wit.

and how much genius shone in a pauper's eye!

held for the living before their funerals.

with marks like brands upon the people's brows?

the tillers of the earth, like grazing beasts—

men drained of life, their faces seared

by whirling gales and the blast of scorching winds—

subjected, through baseness, to the whip of the basest.

And bellies spent the night hungry and empty,

while others were gorged on the finest foods.

whom we need in the thick of crisis?

Are these souls, hollowed out by abjection,

the ones we boast of before our peers on the day of conflict?

Is it from a limp, wasted arm and a shoulder

grown old that we seek a realm with steadfast pillars?

It is unjust to demand genuine resolve

    from a people with strength and determination shattered;

and to seek sincerity in their sacrifices

    when we have left them the victim of a tyrant;

we pursue, from one who shuffles in fetters.

We have a great need of the masses,

one we shall find unmet when battles rage.

when a crisis turns grave, it is the first to cast stones.
