ءعتَبْتُI reproached وماليَand I have no مِنany مَعتبِcause for reproach
ءعتَبْتُ وماليَ مِن مَعتبِ
علىagainst زَمَنٍan age حُوَّلٍchangeable قُلَّبِfickle
على زَمَنٍ حُوَّلٍ قُلَّبِ
I reproached, though I had no cause for reproach,
A fickle, ever-changing age.
أُنلصِقُdo we attach بالدهرto time ماwhat نجتويwe loathe
أُنلصِقُ بالدهر ما نجتوي
ونختصُّand we claim exclusively نحنwe ourselves بماwhat نجتبيwe choose ؟!
ونختصُّ نحن بما نجتبي ؟!
Do we pin on time what we loathe,
And claim for ourselves what we choose?!
كأنَّas though الذيthe one who جاءcame بالمَخْبثاتِwith foul things
كأنَّ الذي جاء بالمَخْبثاتِ
غيرُother than الذيthe one who جاءcame بالطَّيبwith the good!
غيرُ الذي جاء بالطَّيب!
As though the one who brought foul things
Were not the one who brought the good!
وماand nothing is الدهرُtime إلاbut أخوone given to حَيدةٍstanding aside
وما الدهرُ إلا أخو حَيدةٍ
مُطلٌlooking down علىfrom شرَفٍa height يرتبيit ascends
مُطلٌ على شرَفٍ يرتبي
Time is only a neutral bystander,
Looking down from a height it ascends,
يُسجّلُit records معركةَthe battle of الكائناتِbeings
يُسجّلُ معركةَ الكائناتِ
مثلِlike المُسجّلa recording clerk فيin مَكتبan office
مثلِ المُسجّل في مَكتب
Recording the battle of beings,
Like a recording clerk in an office.
فماso what للزمانِhas time to do وكفّيand my hand إذاif
فما للزمانِ وكفّي إذا
قَبضتُI grasped علىonto حُمةَthe sting of العقربthe scorpion؟!
قَبضتُ على حُمةَ العقرب؟!
What has time to do with my hand if
I grasp a scorpion's sting?!
وماand what للَّياليhave the nights to do ومغرورةٍand a deluded soul
وما للَّيالي ومغرورةٍ
تُجَشِّمُنيmakes me undertake خَطرَthe danger of المركبthe voyage؟
تُجَشِّمُني خَطرَ المركب؟
And what have the nights to do with a deluded soul
That makes me brave the voyage's dangers?
بِنابيَwith my fang، مِنfrom قبلِbefore نابِthe fang of الزمانtime
بِنابيَ، مِن قبلِ نابِ الزمان
ومنand from قبلbefore مِخلبهits claw مِخلبيmy claw
ومن قبل مِخلبه مِخلبي
By my own fang, before time's fang,
And my own claw, before its claw,
تَفَرَّىwas torn أديميَmy skin ، لمnot أحَترِسI guard myself
تَفَرَّى أديميَ ، لم أحَترِس
عليهover it احتفاظاًfor safekeeping ولمand not أحدَبI care tenderly!
عليه احتفاظاً ولم أحدَب!
My skin was torn; I did not guard
It to preserve it, nor tend it tenderly!
بناءٌa structure أُقيمَwas raised بجَهدwith the effort of الجُهودall efforts
بناءٌ أُقيمَ بجَهد الجُهود
وَسهرةِand a vigil of أُمٍّa mother ورُعْياand care of أبa father
وَسهرةِ أُمٍّ ورُعْيا أب
A structure raised with the utmost toil,
A mother's vigil and a father's care,
وأضْفَتْand bestowed عليهupon it الدروسُthe lessons الثِقالُweighty
وأضْفَتْ عليه الدروسُ الثِقالُ
لوناًa hue منof الأدبrefinement المُعْجِبadmirable
لوناً من الأدب المُعْجِب
Upon which weighty lessons had bestowed
A hue of admirable refinement.
عَدوتُI assailed عليهit فهدَّمتُهand demolished it
عَدوتُ عليه فهدَّمتُه
كأنas though ليسthere were not ليfor me فيهin it منany مطلبaim!
كأن ليس لي فيه من مطلب!
I assailed it and demolished it,
As though I had no stake in it!
يدايmy two hands َ أعانتaided يدَthe hand of الحادثاتcalamities
يداي َ أعانت يدَ الحادثات
فَرُنِّقَso was muddied طوعat the bidding of يديmy hands مشربيmy drink
فَرُنِّقَ طوع يدي مشربي
My hands aided the hand of calamities,
And my drink was muddied at my own hands' bidding.
أجِدI find وأعلمُand I know عِلمَthe knowledge of اليقينcertainty
أجِد وأعلمُ عِلمَ اليقين
بأنيthat I منwith respect to الدهرtime فيin ملعبa playing field!
بأني من الدهر في ملعب!
I see, and know beyond all doubt,
That I am on time's playing field!
وأنّand that الحياةَlife حَصيدُthe harvest of المماتdeath
وأنّ الحياةَ حَصيدُ الممات
وانand that الشروقَsunrise أخوthe brother of المغربsunset!
وان الشروقَ أخو المغرب!
And that life is death's harvest,
And sunrise is sunset's brother!
وإنيand that I علىaccording to قدْرthe measure of ماwhat كانwas
وإني على قدْر ما كان
بالفُجاءاتِin sudden shocks مِنof قَسوةٍharshness كانwas بيin me
بالفُجاءاتِ مِن قَسوةٍ كان بي
And that I had within me, measure for measure,
The harshness that sudden shocks possessed.
بَعثْنَthey sent forth البَواعثَthe impulses يَصْطَدنَنيto hunt me
بَعثْنَ البَواعثَ يَصْطَدنَني
وأبصرتُand I saw مَنجىan escape فلمyet did not أهربI flee!
وأبصرتُ مَنجى فلم أهرب!
They sent forth impulses to hunt me,
And I saw escape, yet did not flee!
وثارتْand rose up مُخّيلتيmy imagination تَدَّعيit claims
وثارتْ مُخّيلتي تَدَّعي
بأنَّthat التَنزُّلَstooping مَرعىa pasture وبيpestilential
بأنَّ التَنزُّلَ مَرعى وبي
My imagination rose in revolt, claiming
That stooping was a pestilent pasture,
وأنand that الخيانةَtreachery ماwhat لاnot يجوزُis permissible
وأن الخيانةَ ما لا يجوزُ
وأنَّand that التقلّبَfickleness للثعلبbelongs to the fox
وأنَّ التقلّبَ للثعلب
That treachery was impermissible,
And fickleness belonged to the fox;
وأنْand that ليسthere is not فيin الشرِّevil منany مغنمgain
وأنْ ليس في الشرِّ من مغنم
يُعادِلُequals ماwhat فيهin it مِنof مَثْلَبdisgrace
يُعادِلُ ما فيه مِن مَثْلَب
That no gain in evil
Could equal the disgrace it held.
ولماand when أُخِذْتُI was captivated بهاby it وانثنيتْand I yielded
ولما أُخِذْتُ بها وانثنيتْ
نزولاًin submission علىto حُكمهاits judgment المُرهِبterrifying
نزولاً على حُكمها المُرهِب
And when I was swayed by it and yielded,
Submitting to its fearsome judgment,
ووَطَّنْتُand I schooled نفسيmy soul ، كماas تشتهيit desires
ووَطَّنْتُ نفسي ، كما تشتهي
علىto مَطْعمٍfood خَشِنٍcoarse أجْشَبmeager
على مَطْعمٍ خَشِنٍ أجْشَب
And schooled my soul, as it desired,
To subsist on coarse and meager fare,
مشىadvanced للِمثالبِtoward vices ذوone endowed with فِطنةٍcleverness
مشى للِمثالبِ ذو فِطنةٍ
بقوَّةِwith the might of ذيone having لِبدa mane أغلبthick-necked
بقوَّةِ ذي لِبد أغلب
A clever man advanced toward vice,
With the might of a thick-necked, maned lion,
جَسورٍbold رأيsaw أنّthat مَنwhoever يَقتحمْcharges in
جَسورٍ رأي أنّ مَن يَقتحمْ
يُحكَّمْis made master، ومنand whoever يَنكمشْshrinks back يُنْهَبis plundered
يُحكَّمْ، ومن يَنكمشْ يُنْهَب
A bold man who saw that whoever storms ahead
Is made master, while whoever shrinks back is plundered.
وأفرغَهاand he cast them منof صُنوفِkinds of الخِداعِdeceit
وأفرغَها من صُنوفِ الخِداعِ
والغشَّand fraud فيinto قالبٍa mold مُذْهَبgilded
والغشَّ في قالبٍ مُذْهَب
And he cast them—all those kinds of deceit
And fraud—into a gilded mold,
فرفَّتْso they fluttered عليهupon him رَفيفَthe fluttering of الأقاحdaisies
فرفَّتْ عليه رَفيفَ الأقاح
فيin مَنبِتa growing bed نَضرٍfresh مُعشِبgrassy
في مَنبِت نَضرٍ مُعشِب
So they fluttered upon him like daisies
In a fresh and grassy bed,
تُسمَّىthey are called خَلائقَtraits محمودةًpraiseworthy
تُسمَّى خَلائقَ محمودةً
ويُدعَand he is called ىverb-ending fragment أباfather of الخُلُقِcharacter الأطيبthe finest!
ويُدعَ ى أبا الخُلُقِ الأطيب!
Being called praiseworthy traits,
While he was called the father of the finest character!
وراحَand he went سليماًunscathed منby الموبقاتdeadly sins
وراحَ سليماً من الموبقات
ورُحتُand I went كذيlike one with عاهةٍan affliction أجربmangy!
ورُحتُ كذي عاهةٍ أجرب!
He went away unscathed by deadly sins,
While I went like one diseased and mangy!
ولمand did not أدرهِهاI grasp it عِظَةًa lesson مُرَّةًbitter
ولم أدرهِها عِظَةً مُرَّةً
بأنيthat I متىwhenever أحَترِسْI guard myself أُغلَبI am beaten
بأني متى أحَترِسْ أُغلَب
Yet I did not grasp that bitter lesson:
That whenever I guard myself, I am beaten.
ولكنْbut زَعمتُI claimed بأنthat الزمانَtime
ولكنْ زَعمتُ بأن الزمانَ
دانٍlow يُسفُّskimming low معwith الهيدَبthe trailing cloud
دانٍ يُسفُّ مع الهيدَب
Instead, I claimed that time
Was low, skimming with the trailing cloud.
ويومٍand on a day لَبستُI wore عليهon it الحياةَlife
ويومٍ لَبستُ عليه الحياةَ
سوداءblack كاللَّيلةlike the night الَغْيهَبpitch-dark
سوداء كاللَّيلة الَغْيهَب
And on a day when I wore life
Black as the pitch-dark night,
أرىI see بَسمةَthe smile of الفجرِdawn مثلَlike البُكاءweeping
أرى بَسمةَ الفجرِ مثلَ البُكاء
وَشدْوَand the singing of البَلابلnightingales كالمَنْعبlike a raven's croak!
وَشدْوَ البَلابل كالمَنْعب!
I saw dawn's smile as weeping,
And nightingales' song as a raven's croak!
وبِتُّand I spent the night عكوفاًdwelling علىon غُمَّتيmy sorrow
وبِتُّ عكوفاً على غُمَّتي
حريصاًintent علىon المنظرthe sight المُكْرِبdistressing!
حريصاً على المنظر المُكْرِب!
I spent the night dwelling on my sorrow,
Intent upon the distressing sight!
وَبعثرتُand I scattered هاجعةَslumbering الذكرياتmemories
وَبعثرتُ هاجعةَ الذكريات
أُفَتّشُI search عنfor شَبَحٍa phantom مُرعِبterrifying!
أُفَتّشُ عن شَبَحٍ مُرعِب!
I ransacked the slumbering memories,
Searching for a terrifying phantom!
حَملتُI carried هموميmy cares علىon مَنكِبٍa shoulder
حَملتُ همومي على مَنكِبٍ
وهمَّand the care of سوايَothers besides me علىon مَنكِبa shoulder
وهمَّ سوايَ على مَنكِب
I bore my cares upon one shoulder,
And others' cares upon the other.
ولاشيتُand I effaced نفسيَmyself فيamong الأبعدينthose farthest away
ولاشيتُ نفسيَ في الأبعدين
أُفكّرُI think فيهمْof them ، وفيand of الأقربthose nearest!
أُفكّرُ فيهمْ ، وفي الأقرب!
I effaced myself among those farthest away,
Thinking of them, and of those nearest!
ولمَّاand when فَطَنتُI became aware علىof حالةa state
ولمَّا فَطَنتُ على حالة
تَليقُbefits بمنتحِرٍone bent on suicide مُحرِبdestitute..
تَليقُ بمنتحِرٍ مُحرِب..
And when I awoke to a state
Befitting a destitute man bent on suicide,
نسيتُI forgot بأنيthat I اقَترفْتُI had committed الذنوبَsins
نسيتُ بأني اقَترفْتُ الذنوبَ
وانصَعتُand I set off أبحثُI search عنfor مُذنِبa culprit!
وانصَعتُ أبحثُ عن مُذنِب!
I forgot that I had committed the sins,
And set off seeking a culprit!
أخذتُI seized بمخنَقby the throat of هذاthis الزمانage
أخذتُ بمخنَق هذا الزمان
لمnot يفتَكِرْit thought بيof me ولمand not يحسِبit took account!
لم يفتَكِرْ بي ولم يحسِب!
I seized this age by the throat—
It had neither thought of me nor reckoned with me!
ويومٍand on a day تَنَعَّمْتُI reveled مِنin لَذَّةٍa pleasure
ويومٍ تَنَعَّمْتُ مِن لَذَّةٍ
متىwhenever لمnot أُنعَّمْI am gratified بهاby it تذهبit vanishes
متى لم أُنعَّمْ بها تذهب
And on a day when I savored a pleasure
That would pass if I did not enjoy it,
ولمَّاand when انطوتْit passed away مثلَlike أشباهِهاothers like it
ولمَّا انطوتْ مثلَ أشباهِها
وكلُّand every مَسيلٍflowing stream الىtoward مَنضَبa place of drying-up..
وكلُّ مَسيلٍ الى مَنضَب..
When it folded away like others of its kind—
And every stream must run dry—
تَخيَّلتُI imagined حِرصاًout of craving بأنthat الزمانtime
تَخيَّلتُ حِرصاً بأن الزمان
عدوُّthe enemy of اللُبانةِlonging والمأرَبand desire
عدوُّ اللُبانةِ والمأرَب
I imagined, in my craving, that time
Was the enemy of longing and desire;
وأنّand that الطبيعةَnature والكائناتِand beings
وأنّ الطبيعةَ والكائناتِ
ماwhat يَستبينُis visible وماand what يَختبيis hidden
ما يَستبينُ وما يَختبي
And that nature and all beings,
The visible and the hidden,
تألبنَthey conspired يَسلُبْنيto rob me of فُرصةًa chance
تألبنَ يَسلُبْني فُرصةً
منfrom العُمْرِlife إنْif تنألاit recedes, never تَقْرُبdraws near!
من العُمْرِ إنْ تنألا تَقْرُب!
Had conspired to rob me of a chance
In life that, once distant, never draws near!
وأنand that الزمانَtime مشىwent مُسرعاًhurrying
وأن الزمانَ مشى مُسرعاً
يُزاحمُjostles مَوكُبهُits procession مَوكبيmy procession !
يُزاحمُ مَوكُبهُ مَوكبي !
And that time was hurrying on,
Its procession jostling mine!
وأنand that الكواكبَthe stars طُرّاًall سعُدْنَwere fortunate
وأن الكواكبَ طُرّاً سعُدْنَ
ولمand not يَشْقَwas ill-fated منهاamong them سوىexcept كوكبيmy star ّ !
ولم يَشْقَ منها سوى كوكبي ّ !
And that all the stars were fortunate,
With none ill-fated save my own!
وأنيَand that I لوif كنتI were فيin غَمرةٍdeep absorption
وأنيَ لو كنت في غَمرةٍ
مِنin الفكرthought أوor خاطرٍa notion مُتعِبwearying
مِن الفكر أو خاطرٍ مُتعِب
And that, were I immersed
In thought or some wearying notion,
لقَلَّلَit would shorten منfrom خَطوةِa stride جاهداًstriving
لقَلَّلَ من خَطوةِ جاهداً
كمشْيَةِlike the gait of مُثْقلةٍone heavy with young مُقربnear giving birth!
كمشْيَةِ مُثْقلةٍ مُقرب!
It would strive to shorten its stride,
Like the gait of one heavy with young, near term!
ورُحتُand I began أُشبِّهُI liken ماwhat فاتنيI missed
ورُحتُ أُشبِّهُ ما فاتني
منof العيشlife بالبارقto lightning الخُلَّبthat brings no rain
من العيش بالبارق الخُلَّب
And I began to liken what I had missed
Of life to lightning that yields no rain,
مُغاَلطَةًin self-deception ، إنّindeed شرَّthe worst of العَزاءِconsolation
مُغاَلطَةً ، إنّ شرَّ العَزاءِ
تعليلُsoothing نفسكyourself بالمُكذَبwith falsehood!
تعليلُ نفسك بالمُكذَب!
In self-deception; the worst consolation
Is soothing yourself with falsehood!
وإنيand indeed I علىdespite أنthat هذاthis المزاجtemperament
وإني على أن هذا المزاج
رمانيَhas afflicted me بالمُرهِقwith the burdensome المُنْصِبwearisome
رمانيَ بالمُرهِق المُنْصِب
And I, though this temperament
Has afflicted me with exhausting, wearying toil,
وكنتُand I was علىin رُغمspite of عُقْمِthe barrenness of الخليِّthe carefree man
وكنتُ على رُغم عُقْمِ الخليِّ
أهوىI long for حياةَthe life of خليٍّa carefree man غبيfoolish
أهوى حياةَ خليٍّ غبي
And though, despite the carefree man's barrenness,
I yearned for the life of a carefree fool,
لأحمِلُI surely bear ، للفُرَصfor opportunities السانحاتِfleeting
لأحمِلُ ، للفُرَص السانحاتِ
وللأرْيحيَّةand for generosity، نفْسَthe soul of الصبيa child
وللأرْيحيَّة، نفْسَ الصبي
Still bring to fleeting opportunities
And generosity the soul of a child:
طليقاًfree منfrom التَبِعاتobligations الكثارِnumerous
طليقاً من التَبِعات الكثارِ
حُرَّfree in العقيدةbelief والمذهبand doctrine
حُرَّ العقيدة والمذهب
Free of countless obligations,
Free in belief and chosen path,
طَموحاًambitious وأعرفُand I know عُقْبىthe outcome of الطُموحambition
طَموحاً وأعرفُ عُقْبى الطُموح
فلاso neither بالدَّعِيِّa pretender ولاnor المُعْجَبconceited
فلا بالدَّعِيِّ ولا المُعْجَب
Ambitious, knowing ambition's outcome,
Neither a pretender nor conceited.
تَمَتَّعْتُI enjoyed myself فيin رَغدٍabundance مُخصِبfertile
تَمَتَّعْتُ في رَغدٍ مُخصِب
وهُذّبتُand I was refined فيin يَبَسٍdryness مُجدِبbarren
وهُذّبتُ في يَبَسٍ مُجدِب
I have enjoyed fertile abundance,
And been refined in barren drought.
وand أفضَلُbetter منthan رَوَحاتِthe leisurely outings of النعيمbliss
و أفضَلُ من رَوَحاتِ النعيم
علىfor النفسthe soul مَسغبَةُthe hunger of المُترِبthe destitute
على النفس مَسغبَةُ المُترِب
And better than pleasure's leisurely outings
For the soul is a pauper's hunger.
فانْso if جِئتُI brought بالمُوجعِthe painful المشتكيthe plaintive
فانْ جِئتُ بالمُوجعِ المشتكي
فقدthen indeed جئتُI brought بالمُرقِصwhat makes one dance المُطرِبwhat delights!
فقد جئتُ بالمُرقِص المُطرِب!
So if I have brought pain and lament,
I have also brought dance and delight!
دَعlet الدهرِtime يذهبْit go علىat رِسْلهِits own pace
دَع الدهرِ يذهبْ على رِسْلهِ
وسرْand walk أنتَyou وحدكَon your own فيin مَذهبa path
وسرْ أنتَ وحدكَ في مَذهب
Let time go at its own pace,
And go your own way, alone.
ولاand do not تَحتفِلpay heed بكتاباتهِto its writings
ولا تَحتفِل بكتاباتهِ
أرِدْwill أنتyou ماwhat تشتهيyou desire يُكتبwill be written !
أرِدْ أنت ما تشتهي يُكتب !
Pay no heed to what it writes;
Will what you desire, and it shall be written!
فانْand if وَجَدَتْfound دَرَّةًa flow of milk حُلوةًsweet
فانْ وَجَدَتْ دَرَّةً حُلوةً
يداكyour two hands ، فدُونَكَهاthen take it for yourself فاحلِبthen milk
يداك ، فدُونَكَها فاحلِب
And if a sweet source of milk is found
By your hands, take it and milk it!
فانَّfor indeed الحماقةَfolly أنْto تَنثنيyou turn away
فانَّ الحماقةَ أنْ تَنثني
معwith الواردينَthose coming to water ولمand did not تشرَبyou drink
مع الواردينَ ولم تشرَب
For folly is to turn away
With those who came to water, without drinking.
تَسَلَّحْarm yourself بماwith what اسطعتَyou can manage منof حيلةٍcunning
تَسَلَّحْ بما اسطعتَ من حيلةٍ
إلىto الذئبِthe wolf تُعزَىit is ascribed ، أوor الأرنبthe hare
إلى الذئبِ تُعزَى ، أو الأرنب
Arm yourself with whatever cunning you can,
Whether ascribed to wolf or hare.
وإنْand if تَرَyou see مَصلحةًan advantage فاصدقنَّthen surely tell the truth
وإنْ تَرَ مَصلحةً فاصدقنَّ
وإنْand if لمnot تَجِدْyou find طائلاًany gain فاكذبthen lie!
وإنْ لم تَجِدْ طائلاً فاكذب!
If you see an advantage, speak the truth;
If you find no gain, then lie!
ولاand no بأسَharm بالشرِّin evil فاضرِبْso strike بهwith it
ولا بأسَ بالشرِّ فاضرِبْ به
إذاif كانthere is لابُدَّno escape منfrom مَضرَبَa blow
إذا كان لابُدَّ من مَضرَبَ
There is no harm in evil—strike with it
If a blow must be struck.
