I have nothing left that pain can wrest from me.

Sorrow and old age are terrors enough for me.

I have no grief left to match calamities,

nor blood enough for wounds that cry aloud.

And when his ember overwhelms the anguished man,

silence is the best thing a mouth can close upon.

And those enduring affliction are enticed

by a dream of their homelands embracing them.

They recalled Balfour's pledge, and I said to them:

What you find new, I have known of old.

Sixty years ago, at its shameful birth,

I held a mourning rite for a land whose Jerusalem is a sanctuary.

    بل المعرَّةُ في أنْ يَغضَبَ الخَدَمُ

    Let no masters whose reprisals are feared take offense;

rather, the shame lies in servants taking offense.

For I do not confuse the accusations reaped

by an innocent people with an accused man's deeds.

And of a society's agonies, I am only

a wound; and of the embers within it, a blaze.

How often, with long-winded excuses, you undo

what you bind, heedless of the exasperation,

like an abject man whose dignity has been trampled,

for whom a flood of words is a trifling thing.

Damascus, O nation where nations have alighted,

a banner among them when their banners are lowered.

As though she were, for her neighbors' sins,

atonement, and for her slanderer, remorse.

O resolve, in whose name resolves are roused!

O summit before which summits tumble!

Damascus, the faces of treachery, when unveiled,

are less evil than when they go masked.

Hypocrisy is a pit that shows no trace

of the hypocrite's footsteps until the day he crashes down.

Evil has rallied, rabid, with a ravenous craving

to bite, even if that craving destroys it.

And silence has stunned a windbag who stuns others,

and from a loudspeaker deafness has crept into the ear.

And he recoiled from you, his allies mere servants,

his face dust-covered, his nose rubbed in the dust.

And many a filthy face like his has been scorched,

then turned away, slapped by your cleanest hand.

And you, O lion of the forest, by whom

manhood has sworn that crises shall become lions.

O firmly rooted mountain, filled with proud disdain

for submission, with lofty pride that will not bow.

Plant a firm foot against it; a wolf-pack will fear you—

one granted no foothold in any forest.

O keeper of the covenant, who gave it his solemn pledges

that, as long as he lives, its bonds shall not be broken.

The world and her family have given you their pledge:

that self-sacrifice is an army never defeated.
