However you picture it, let it be.

I have no need of people's portrayals.

I care not whether I am censured or praised.

In my conscience I have what satisfies me.

    هزة الروح تُرى في بَدنَي

    I am not unfeeling: I am a poet;

The spirit's tremor shows in my body.

My habit is to portray what is in my thoughts,

And I am captivated by this habit.

Because of my tongue, I am afflicted,

Despite my sensitivity, with a harsh life.

What alone lends distinction to my poem

Is that it comes from your resentful foe,

From a young man subjected by his stance

    Toward you yesterday to all manner of ordeals;

Its coming from a poet cast aside,

And a fair-minded thinker, sorely tried,

    Soon to leave his family,

Seeking refuge with the Imam of Yemen!

And if he does not favor me, I shall be a man

Working in a mine in Aden.

It is more restful for me than a homeland

From which I suffer a chronic, incurable malady.

I admire what I do not see,

And see what is not admirable.

O Abu Adnan, this is an opportunity

For a heart swollen with hurt.

I show you no favoritism; but I am a young man

Who seeks the truth, even in my shroud.

History and God bear witness together

That you are this homeland's treasure.

    Knowing its ailments, well acquainted

With its secrets, putting an end to discord.

There is in you—were it not for an ignorant nation—

A likeness that brings you close to Mussolini.

A hero when ordeals oppress—and how

Scarce heroes are in times of trial!

And forthright and eloquent in a crisis

That calls for someone forthright and eloquent.

    You appeared radiant—while they walked,

All of them, beneath a dusky mask—

    With mighty, sweeping strides,

And with a sound, balanced mind,

When all the people, in their disguises,

Were like a spiny-tailed lizard burrowed in hiding.

The seat you once held is vacant now—

You who filled a man's eye, filled his ear.

A young man crushed the reckless weaklings,

Who was not pliant in crushing them.

He who pays no heed to a gullible fool.

And he showed them a strength they had not found

The like of in a temple or an idol.

They did not see in him, as in others,

Their companion, a libertine or an addict.

He was not lax in gripping them

With a tyrant's grip, nor could he be swayed.

Do you think a germ has grown secure

That was not safe from his onslaught?

The envious bore a grudge when they failed to match

The pace of one trotting along a straight path,

In charge of affairs, taking pride in them,

    And entrusted with their management.

And had his hand found scope,

He would have led them all to a camel watering-ground.

Bear witness, O goddess of poetry, and O

Realm of truth, say amen to it:

The outcome of a victory that comes to me

By way of intrigue does not please me.

And base is he who opposes his adversary

By a path made base by grudges.

    I long—even if only in a dream—

To hold power for the briefest time.

And what truly sets my feelings aflame

Is that this time has not yet come.

Entrust me with the helm of rule, if only

For an hour: I shall bring what has never been.

    أُرِكُم كيفَ مصيرُ الأرعَن

    I shall show you where the bribe-taker will be;

I shall show you what the reckless fool's fate will be.

I shall show you the worth of words with which

The liar dons the patriot's garb,

Doing in secret what does not accord

With what he does in public.

I shall show you that I have no worth

Beyond what my own mettle earns me.

I shall show you that the one you fear

Has no one to weep for him if he perishes.

O Abu Adnan, this is the duty of literature—

    Pure, forthright, and well-crafted.

Indeed, in setting it down I have erased

All the grime within my thoughts.

And you surely know what befalls me—

The hurt from voicing this sorrow.

Yet in such a thing I find

The delight of the lover and the enraptured.

And it is shameful for a poet

To shelter in his poetry behind grudges.
