Hail the ranks assembling to mend the rift,

And hail the wakeful ones' cry to those asleep.

Indeed, the young, God's soldiers, were brought together

In al-Sham by a caller from the homelands whom they follow.

Damascus, time has left nothing of you

Save that beside which guarding against anything else is abasement.

And were I to rebuke you out of affection,

I would say: despite your glory, your nose is cut off.

So I said: no harm, if its cloud of dust

Clears to reveal the anger of the plundered land.

By stalwart men who cast lots with death.

And death fills their hidden wing-feathers when they alight.

Trust, Damascus: no boundary, no mark,

No lines devised like a child's play,
