    Come, mend—may God watch over you—what has gone wrong,

    What you yourself spoiled in an affair that arose and went too far.

    The lovely girl grew estranged after her intimacy,

    And turned away in aversion after her approach.

    تخالُها، ألفَ ألفٍ، ضوعفت عددا

    You showed her 'the thousand,' and her appetite grew ravenous;

    She imagines it a thousand thousand, multiplied in number,

    And that I have Qarun's treasure, and that hers is

    The share of his estate that falls to family and children.

    After twenty had once so dazzled her,

    Almost snatching away her soul and body.

    You spoiled Mayki—and Mayki is a rose plucked

    From the Garden of Eternity while its Ridwan slept.

    As though her nakedness beneath a dark night's wing

    Were morning's nakedness revealed over green fields.

    As though the freshness of a breeze within her breath

    Blew from Darayya's night over the Barada.

    Come, mend—may God watch over you—what has gone wrong,

    And let her fulfill the promise that was made.

    تَجِدْ له في قلوب الغانياتِ صدى

    Concoct for her the sweetest of false words;

    You will find an echo for it in the hearts of beauties.

    Swear to her it is ten, to which you added

    Two zeros, intending only jest and nonsense.

    Or that it is paper you colored until it looked

    Like silver money, cash received in payment.

    Or that, while awake, she wooed a dream,

    Till, when she rubbed her eyelids, it was driven away.

    Swear to her that, if he possessed it,

    He would die of joy, or go mad and tremble.

    He knows 'a thousand' only in his misfortunes,

    Or his foes, or the bitterness he has reaped.

    Yet he owns the world through a passion

    That surges, and a heart that sets ice ablaze.

    And half of this and that is yours—

    Even a little of it arouses rancor and envy.

    ينسى بيومِكِ أمساً غابراً وغدا

    Remain—may you be safe—a shade for him to shelter in;

    In your day he forgets a bygone yesterday and tomorrow.

    And give him rich treasures of yourself,

    For in love there is a treasure forever full.

    فكم شأى في " الفتون " الوالدُ الولدا

    And do not deem differences of age a barrier;

    For how often has a father surpassed his son in charm!

    Seventeen and seventy, when the two unite,

    Are youth, wisdom, grace, and sound judgment.

    ومن يمت منكما يوماً فقد خَلَدا

    If you both live on, art's sapling will grow between you;

    And whichever of you dies one day will have become immortal.

    فإن في الحرف زهراً يجمع الشَهَدا

    Distill for her the honey that the bees melt;

    For in the written word are blossoms that gather honey.

    فإن في الحرف سماً يقتُلُ الأَسَدا

    Or else your doom is in my palm and at my mouth's command;

    For in the written word is poison that kills the lion.
