Beauty, your foot is in the stirrup,

and your hands toy with the book.

And I, thirsting for your drink,

had my own saliva for a drink.

    Beauty, my turmoil was heightened

by the cruelty of belittlement amid my turmoil.

    Beauty, the watch that you

wound was part of my pursuit.

I tried to make it the pretext

for making contact and drawing near.

In vain, for you understood what

the husks seek from the kernel.

    You knew well the jackal

when he circled around the crow.

I swallowed the humiliation of asking,

yet you begrudged me even an answer.

I had not known, before this

kindness, how kind feigned ignorance could be.

Beauty, my pursuit would not be difficult

if what is in you were like what is in me.

But in you is playful merriment,

and its charm, and the blood of youth.

While in me is that which nothing rivals

in ugliness except the pretense of youth.

And the streak of gray hair looks like

grass ready to be gathered for fuel.

    Beauty, the world, and you,

and all upon it are bound to change.

What was once a reason to draw near

has become a reason to stay away.

If there passes across my temples—

    both white—a matchstick,

then I might leave with my locks

like an Eid crescent watched for.

    Beauty, indeed, love

and youthful passions are my concern and my habit.

I am a bee that gathered from the flowers

    the saliva they exude,

and cast it forth as honey that softens

the bitterness of every bitter sap.

    Beauty, if desire

and love could be taken by force,

what lay between me and you would indeed have been

the closeness of a hammer and a door.

Rather, it was the distance between the two easts,

and I have returned to my senses.

We were as far apart as anything in sight,

    impossible to draw together.
