أهذِهِ صَخرةٌ أمْ هذِه كبِدُ
All I face and all I feel are in God's keeping.
In God's keeping what I find and what I lose,
Is this a rock, or is this a liver?
Is this a boulder or is this a liver?

Grief may kill one whose loved ones have gone far away
Grief can kill those whose loved ones became distant,
From him; what then of one whose loved ones are lost?
So what of those whose loved ones are lost?

The world flows on its cables, and thoughts follow it
An opinion explaining its course, and a belief.
With arguments justifying its course and creed.

أعيا الفلاسفةَ الأحرارَ جهلُهمُ

ماذا يخِّبي لهمْ في دَفَّتيهِ غد
Their ignorance has wearied the free-thinking philosophers:
The ignorance of free philosophers wearied me -
What does tomorrow hide for them between its two covers?
What does tomorrow conceal for them in its folds?

Long has their contriving lasted, and their solutions grown intractable,
Expectations dragged on and their promises lingered,
Yet the knots remain just as they were.
Yet knots remained as they always were.

Would that life, and death as well, were mercy,
If only life and only death were a solace -
So no youth died at twenty, nor Lubad lived on,
Neither the youth of twenty nor decrepitude.

No girl were cut down in the bloom of youth,
If only the maid in the prime of youth were not plucked
And no old woman leaned upon both hands.
Nor the old woman relying on her palms.

Would that the vultures were stripped of half
If only the eagles' lives were drained halfway -
Their lifespans, with no one singled out to receive them.
And none were reserved for them in particular.

بمثلِ ما انجبَتْ تُكنى بما تَلِد
Greetings, Umm Furat! Indeed, a mother
Greetings O mother of the Euphrates - a mother is titled
Who has borne such children is named for those she bears.
By what she delivers, not by what she breeds.
تحيَّةًa greeting لمnot أجِدْI found منfrom بثِّexpressing لاعِجِهاits burning anguish

بُدّاً ، وإنْ قامَ سدّاً بيننا اللَحد
A greeting: from pouring out its burning anguish I found
I could find no way to communicate her fervor
No escape, though the grave stood as a wall between us.
Other than a barrier, even if the tomb came between us.

Respond to it in spirit: it is a bond
With the soul, respond to her - it is a bond
Between those who love; what use is the body?
Between lovers - what use is the body?

My tears would have been scarce, had you not stirred a grief
My tears would have been too proud had you not provoked tenderness,
From which I turned to burning tears to cool myself.
I would have returned from the heat of tears desensitized.

I cast off the robe of patience that had covered me,
I took off the garb of endurance that covered me
And my claim to fortitude was shown to be a lie.
And the false claim that I am stoic was exposed.

I wept until even those who did not know me wept,
I cried until those who don't know me cried,
And I wailed until a tuneful bird echoed me.
I melted until a singing bird consoled me.

قاسٍ تفَجَّرَ دمعاً قلبيَ الصَلد
As a stone bursts forth into a gushing spring,
Just as a harsh stone burst into copious tears,
Hard though it is, so my flinty heart burst into tears.
So did my hardened heart burst into tears.

Indeed, to God we return—a saying that brings rest
To God we belong! A saying one finds solace in,
And in which believers and deniers are alike.
And the believers and disbelievers are equal in it.

Stretch out a hand to me, and a hand will reach for you;
Stretch out a hand to me that stretches out to you -
In life or death, we must be united.
In life or in death we must unite!

We were like two halves; fate overtook one,
We were like two predestined, faithful halves -
And the lot of the other is close to that one's.
One's matter is hindered by the other's.

I communed with your grave, seeking answers from its darkness
I spoke to your grave, draw from its depths
About the condition of a guest coming to it in haste.
The state of a guest, hastening, seeking it.

And a barren wilderness within my heart repeated
An empty echo in my heart, desolate,
The echo of one seeking water, but finding none.
Returned the call of one who seeks company but finds none.

And a phantom enfolded me—how like it was
A specter enveloped me, nothing resembled it
To your curled hair, coiling around your face.
Except your disheveled hair gathered around the face.

I laid my head within its folds, afraid,
I threw my head into its folds, terrified,
Just as I did when I grieved and my heart ached,
Like I did when I despaired and clung.

صَدرٍ هو الدهرُ ما وفى وما يَعِد
In the days when, if my breast grew tight, I found rest against
If the bosom of my chest finds comfort
A breast that was time itself, all it had fulfilled and all it promised.
In a chest, time never fulfilled nor promised.

أظُنُ قبرَكِ رَوضاً نورُه يَقِد
May God not leave desolate a dwelling where you abide;
God does not forsake a quarter you reside in -
I think your grave a garden whose light burns bright.
I reckon your grave is a garden lit by His light.

And that your spirit is solace in which you find comfort,
And your soul is a gazelle that frolics with it
When a dead man tosses restlessly, his spirit full of misery.
When a lifeless soul tosses and turns, gloomy.

We were like a basil plant ravaged by
We were like a basil plant that harsh conditions
A freezing wind, its leaves stripped off and scattered.
Uprooted. So its leaves are scattered, dispersed.

You sheltered my children with your wings, and were to them
A smiling mouth when they awoke, a watchful eye when they slept.
A mouth when they woke, eyes when they slept.

Can my grief count as repayment?
Can it be loyalty that I endure?

Never did rancor or impurity find in her heart
No malice nor taint found a place in her heart,
A place, nor malice, nor envy.
No wickedness nor envy.

She didn't harm her neighbor,
Tormented at good fortune coming her neighbor's way, and aggrieved.
She turned to any good she was endowed with and was persecuted.

Nor did she bow to a calamity whose coming was decreed,
She didn't humiliate herself before any suitor
Nor did wealth and children make her turn her cheek in pride.
Nor make wealth and children conceited.

They said, 'The telegram has come swiftly,' and I told them:
They said lightning came hastily, so I told them:
'By God, had it been good news, the couriers would have been slow.'
By God, had it been good, it would have tarried.

Lebanon's meadows, for all their breadth, grew narrow
Lebanon's expanses narrowed with what had expanded
For me, and the hills and uplands closed in.
Upon me, and the summits and peaks closed in.

She who danced to the eyes with her vitality
In the days when we were together and life was ease,
During days when we were and life was prosperous.

Now black, breathing forth a memory that burns me,
A gloomy one who blows out memories that burn me
Until I seem to resent their luxuriant bloom.
As if I were a naked man upon them.

By God, no place to set out for or move to pleased me
By God, no bed nor shelter was permitted me
Once your death was announced, nor any person, nor any land.
When you were announced dead, nor any land.

Where can I flee, when everything here pursues me,
Where is the escape when memories chase me everywhere
And memories are fresh, their stem still tender?
Like the flight of birds returning over and over?

Are they the shadows that used to shelter us
Or the hills, or the water we came to drink?
Or the hills or the water we sipped?

Or you, before my eyes? There, a place to lie down
Or are you present? Prone, then relieved, resting.
For us, and there a resting place and a pillow.

How swiftly the vision changed, although unchanged were
And didn't last, except an hour, their duration.
The sights, and no more than an hour had passed.

I passed the poplar grove, filled with wedding festivities,
Then returned while it shuddered like a demon's abode.
And returned to find it trembling like a haunt of jinn.

At her farewell, while she is in her coffin.
My farewell to her as she lies in her coffin.

She is, in life and what I encountered in it, a support?
A support for me in life and all I face within it.
