    In every part of you, a spirit of piety

    Bestows upon it its purest beauty.

    So it is as though your waist, amid its seclusion,

    Were a Sufi devoted to the more enduring world,

    And as though your neck, in its uprightness,

    Were holding fast to the firmest handhold.

    لا تسألي مَن منهما الأتقى

    In the waist is the same piety as in the neck;

    Do not ask which of the two is more devout.

    فأنا هنا سَيلٌ مِنَ الغرقَى

    And my limbs have drowned in love for you;

    So here I am, a torrent of the drowned.

    لا تَطلُبِي من غيرِهِم صِدقا

    And I am the victims in their true essence;

    Do not seek truth from anyone but them.

    Come, love me, so that we may have the chance

    To reclaim creation for ourselves.

    If you have never, in love, braved the sea

    Before me, nor explored its depths,

    Then a single butterfly in the fire

    Is enough for us to learn love.

    Come, love me, so that we may fly to

    The farthest reaches and widen the horizon.

    And as we embrace, we see its galaxy:

    A neck clasping another neck in love.

    Your forearms are a balance; with their weight

    The orbit weighs the West and the East.

    Do not raise a forearm on its own,

    Lest the most wretched planet tilt.

    سنضيع حين نُضَيِّعُ الشَّوقَا

    And hold fast to longing as a compass;

    We shall be lost when we lose our longing.

    Do not trust my fingers, for I

    Know that my fingers are fools.
