وَقَعتَyou fell بِعَبسٍupon ʿAbs ثُمَّthen أَنعَمتَyou bestowed favors فيهِمُupon them
وَقَعتَ بِعَبسٍ ثُمَّ أَنعَمتَ فيهِمُ
وَمِنand from آلِthe house of بَدرٍBadr قَدindeed أَصَبتَyou struck الأَكابِراthe leading men
وَمِن آلِ بَدرٍ قَد أَصَبتَ الأَكابِرا
You fell upon ʿAbs, then bestowed favors upon them.
You struck them with a frown, then granted them favor,
And you have struck the leading men of the house of Badr.
And from the clan of Badr you have slain the elders.
فَإِنso if يَشكُرواthey give thanks فَالشُكرُthen gratitude أَدنىnearer إِلىto التُقىpiety
فَإِن يَشكُروا فَالشُكرُ أَدنى إِلى التُقى

وَإِن يَكفُروا لا أُلفَ يا زَيدُ كافِرا
So if they give thanks, gratitude is nearer to piety.
If they are grateful, gratitude is but basic piety,
And if they are ungrateful, may I not be found ungrateful, O Zayd.
And if they disbelieve, I do not mind, O Zayd, their disbelief.

You left the watering places of Tamim desolate,
You left the waters of Tameem empty and ruined,
Where once you would see them encamped in great throngs.
With what you see among them, encampments overturned.

And the tribe of Sulaym—you have annihilated their fugitives.
And you revived the wanderers of Banu Sulaym,
And before that, you slaughtered ʿAmir yesterday.
When just yesterday you had killed ‘Amir.
