إِذاwhenever قُلتُI said أَنّيthat I am آيِبٌreturning أَهلَthe people of بَلدَةٍa town
وَضَعتُI laid aside بِهاin it عَنهُoff him الوَلِيَّةَthe saddle-cloth بِالهَجرِin the noonday heat
Whenever I say I am returning to the people of a town,
When I say I yearn for the people of a place
there I remove his saddle-cloth in the noonday heat.
Where I put aside power through estrangement
تَرىyou see بَينَbetween مَجرىthe sweep of مِرفَقَيهِhis two elbows وَثيلِهِand his penile sheath

You see between the sweep of his elbows and his penile sheath
You see between the course of its elbows and flanks
an empty space like a barren plain whose people have departed.
An air like a whirlwind, its people seem deserted

When, one day, his two jaw muscles creak over cud,
When one day it chewed with Molars
a head like a grave-mound springs up above the jaw hinges.
A cloud descended over the summits like a grave
وَإِنand if عَبَّhe gulped فيin ماءٍwater سَمِعتَyou heard لِجَرعِهِfrom his gulping

And if he gulps water, you hear from his gulping
And if it roared in water, you’d hear its gulp
a hollow gurgle, like irrigation channels being breached in the fields.
Like the trickling of streams at nightfall

And if he fears the stiff whip's stroke, he bears down
And if it feared the forbidden's impact, it sidled
on a fleshy upper foreleg like a palace column.
On adelicate arm like a palace column

It is followed from behind, without slowing him,
I followed it but no trained she-camel behind it
by a curved-hocked, wide-set hind leg, slow to tire,
Could keep up, though easy of gait and slack of rein

joined to a rump like a door with its bolt secured,
To a rump like a door whose bolt is drawn
and a towering back bearing the saddle with brown straps.
And a hip ridged as if clad in coat of mail
