لاnot يُصلِحونَset things right وَماand whatever اِستَطاعواthey could أَفسَدواthey ruined
May God disgrace the sons of Bijad, for they
set nothing right, and ruin whatever they can.

Sluggish in defending honor; their ally stands alone,
stingy toward one from whom they should withhold nothing.

Grey-haired simpletons whose wits do not return
at daybreak, when other wits return.
فَإِذاso if تَقَطَّعَتِare severed الوَسائِلُthe bonds بَينَناbetween us

So if the bonds between us are severed,
it is for what their hands have wrought—away with them!

Whoever may have won his guests’ praise for hospitality,
the sons of Bijad have never been praised for theirs.
