إِنَّindeed عَمرواًʿAmr وَماand what تَجَشَّمَshouldered عَمروٌʿAmr
كَاِبنِlike the son of بيضٍBayḍ غَداةَon the morning سُدَّwas blocked السَبيلُthe way
Indeed, ʿAmr, with what ʿAmr has shouldered,
Indeed Amr and what Amr endured
is like Ibn Bayḍ on the morning the way was blocked.
Is like the son of Bayad on the morrow when the road was blocked.
لَمdid not تَجِدfind غالِبٌGhālib وَراءَكَbeyond you مَعدىًa recourse
لِتُراثٍfor an inheritance وَلاnor دَمٌblood مَطلولُleft without redress
Ghālib has found no recourse beyond you
No conqueror did you find behind you, Ma'diyy,
for an inheritance; nor is any blood left without redress.
For inheritance, nor blood shed wantonly.
كُلُّevery أَمرٍmatter يَنوبُbefalls عَبساًʿAbs جَميعاًas a whole
أَنتَyou فيهِin it المُطاعُthe one obeyed فيماin what تَقولُyou say
In every matter that befalls all of ʿAbs,
Every matter becomes, in its entirety, submissive to you,
you are the one obeyed in what you say.
You in it are obeyed in what you say.
قَدalready تَحَمَّلتَyou shouldered خَيرَthe best of ذاكَthat وَليداًas a child
أَنتَyou لِلصالِحاتِfor good deeds قِدماًfrom of old فَعولُa prolific doer
Already as a child, you shouldered the best of that;
You took on well that, O Walid,
you have long been a doer of many good deeds.
For good works your feet are active and speedy.
