Do you recognize the dwelling, after two years or one?

Hind's dwelling, at the valley bend of al-Kharj and then al-Dam.

Dappled, wide-eyed wild cows bend tenderly over their calves,

Dark-cheeked, far removed from any blemish.

And there I would visit at dawn a golden-skinned, companionable maiden,

Who swears no oaths to withhold a kindness.

A tender, playful maiden, whose sweet scent and fragrance

Heal the heart of one wasted in body and ever ailing.

Oh, my soul's regret for a bargain I had meant to strike!

Had I secured it, it would have been a profitable, flourishing bargain.

I desire it while it is far from me, yet abandon it

After it has come within a thumb's breadth of me.

My soul be your ransom, for the bounty for which you are sought,

And for the marching hosts when they resolve to advance,

And a mighty army, like pitch-dark night, seeking pasture

In the enemy's land, bringing hardship after bounty.

You gathered into it men of ʿAmir and Asad,

And of Tamim, and of Haʾ, and of Ham.

Nor were you content with their strength until you reinforced them

With detachments from Waʾil, Bistam's clan.

In it are spears, and in it every full-length coat of mail,

Tightly linked, impenetrable, woven by Sallam.

And every sleek steed, like a wolf, made sinewy by

Rubbing with the palms, and watering after feeding.

And every broad-mouthed mare, obedient and unresisting,

At dawn, when they set about bridling her.

Their lips bearing their bridle-irons behind them,

An Ashʿari advances with them, his gaze uplifted.

He takes no omens from birds, should they pass him from left to right,

Nor does he cast lots with divining arrows to divide shares.
