Your chief indeed called for an early departure,

and they did not turn back for you, nor were you visited.

And on the day of Rahba the women in their litters sped away

with a distraught spirit from your heart.

I remembered you at al-Jamum, and on the day they passed

by Marran, my remembrance returned to me.

    Taym boast, yet Taym's stock

is like counterfeit coinage, unsaleable to merchants.

You are known in the settlements, son of Taym,

as base in stock and borrowed in lineage.

Go slowly with your boasting, son of Taym:

a slave—you have not been freed from captivity.

Consider: can you boast, son of Taym,

of a branch, or has your root any firm footing?

For they have never known racing, nor have

the faces of Taym emerged from the dark haze of dust.

Does Taym seek the champion of the racecourses,

who took the lead on the battlefields when he competed,

a purebred, neither of whose parents Taym bore,

nor was he descended from the sister of Banu Hudhar?

By your father's life, the trees of Taym are not

of noble nabʿ-wood, nor of nudar-wood.

    And Tamim know that Taym

stand far from Nizar when their descent is traced.

So you seek refuge with the clan of Sa'd,

through the covenant of alliance or the bond of neighborly protection.

    فَقَد أُرديتَ في اللُجَجِ الغِمارِ

    We count our Tamim, and you count Taym;

so you have been cast to ruin in the engulfing depths.

We have Amr to boast over you, and the clan of Sa'd,

and Darim's multitudes, and the pebbles of the massed clans.

And the pilgrims' conductor is ours to boast over you,

and age-old noble deeds and beacons.

And my maternal uncle is of Khuzayma, son of Taym,

his house great, its pillars towering.

Indeed, Ibn Barza, on the day he competed, was found

    slow to raise the stakes.

How, then, do you find my tugging, son of Taym,

now that you are bound with the young camels' coupling-rope?

You will not part from my two tethers until

my hauling you up and down has gone on long.

Not on mays-wood saddles do Taym's envoys travel,

    but on saddle-pads and cushion-saddles.

We found Taym to be from Saba', and Taym

are neighbors of monkeys, living with hyraxes.

If you repay our favor, you will thank

Riyah or the horsemen of Dhu al-Khimar.

Do you, sleeping at ease, equate the night of Aysar

with the night of the bridled mares at Safar,

one after another at their tethers, kept close at hand,

made lean by raiding, their bodies drawn tight?

We give them evening milk before our sons,

and feed them year-old grain before the little ones.

And Ibn Abhar knows that my horses

on the morning of al-Jumd were true in the assault.

Bearing us, they struck the battalions of the house of Nasr,

and the advancing host of the two Mundhirs and Dhu al-Murar.

And we have split the skulls of tyrants,

as though their bones were fragments of seashells.

For the men of Taym have witnessed no war,

nor the days of Tikhfa and al-Nisar.
