لِمُجاشِعٍfor Mujashi ظَفَرٌvictory وَلاnor اِستِبشارُjoy
Know that in my renewed contest with Farazdaq
Mujashi has neither victory nor cause for joy.
إِنَّindeed القَصائِدَthe poems قَدalready جَدَعنَcut the nose from مُجاشِعاًMujashi
بِالسُمِّwith poison يُلحَمُis joined نَسجُهاtheir weave وَيُنارُand stretched
My poems have cut the nose from Mujashi;
their weave is joined and stretched with venom.
وَلَقواand they met عَواصِيَstubborn verses قَدalready عَيِيتَyou failed بِنَقضِهاto undo them
وَلَقَدand indeed نُقِضتَyou were undone فَماso not بِكَin you اِستِمرارُendurance
They met stubborn verses you failed to undo,
while you were undone and had no strength to endure.
قَدindeed كانَwere قَومُكَyour people يَحسَبونَكَthinking you شاعِراًa poet
حَتّىuntil غَرِقتَyou drowned وَضَمَّكَand engulfed you التَيّارُthe current
Your people once thought you a poet
until you drowned and the current engulfed you.

مِنهُfrom it مُراهَنَةٌa wager وَلاnor مِشوارُa contest
Farazdaq has drawn from it nothing to please Mujashi,
neither a wager nor a contest.
قَصُرَتfell short يَداكَyour two hands عَنِof السَماءِthe sky فَلَمand not يَكُنwas there

فيin الأَرضِthe earth لِلشَجَرِfor the tree الخَبيثِevil قَرارُa footing
Your hands fell short of the sky, and
the evil tree found no footing on earth.
أَثنَتspoke نَوارُNawar عَلىof الفَرَزدَقِFarazdaq خَزيَةًto his shame
صَدَقَتshe spoke truly وَماand not كَذَبَتshe lied عَلَيكَabout you نَوارُNawar
Nawar spoke of Farazdaq to his shame;
Nawar spoke truly and did not lie about you.
وَإِلَيهِand at him بِالعَمَلِfor the deed الخَبيثِfoul يُشارُpeople point
Farazdaq remains covered in disgrace,
and people point to him for his foul conduct.
لاlet it not be hidden يَخفَيَنَّfrom you عَلَيكَthat أَنَّMujashi's people as a group are addressed here.
لَوif يُنفَخونَthey are puffed up مِنَwith الخُؤورِcowardice لَطارواthey would fly
Do not overlook that Mujashi,
if puffed up in cowardice, would fly away.
قَدindeed يُؤسَرونَthey are captured فَماbut not يُفَكَّis freed أَسيرُهُمtheir captive
وَيُقَتَّلونَand they are killed فَتَسلَمُso remain safe الأَوتارُthe bowstrings
They are captured, and their captive is never freed;
they are killed, while the bowstrings remain safe.
وَيُفايِشونَكَand they boast to you وَالعِظامُwhile the bones ضَعيفَةٌweak
وَالمُخُّand the marrow مُمتَخَرُthin and exhausted الهُنانَةِof frailty رارُsoft
They boast to you, though their bones are weak,
and the marrow in their frail skulls is thin.
نَظَرواthey looked إِلَيكَat you وَقَدwhile تَقَلَّبَhad turned هامُهُمtheir heads
نَظَرَthe look الضِباعُof hyenas أَصابَهُنَّthat struck them دُوارُdizziness
They looked at you with heads turning
like dizzy hyenas.
قُرِنَwas coupled الفَرَزدَقُFarazdaq وَالبَعيثُand al-Ba'ith وَأُمُّهُand his mother
وَأَبوand the father الفَرَزدَقِof Farazdaq قُبِّحَmay it be shamed الإِستارُthe coupling
Farazdaq was coupled with al-Ba'ith and his mother,
and Farazdaq's father too; shame on that coupling.
أَضحىhe began يُرَمِّزُtwitching حاجِبَيهِhis eyebrows كَأَنَّهُas though he
ذيخٌa male hyena لَهُfor it بِقَصيمَتَينِbetween two thickets وِجارُa den
He began twitching his eyebrows as though he were
a male hyena with a den between two thickets.

لَكِنَّbut قَوميmy people بِالطِعانِin spear thrusts تِجارُare traders
My people have no trade in anvils;
my people's trade is thrusting spears.
يَحميdefend فَوارِسيَmy horsemen الَّذينَwho لِخَيلِهِمfor their horses
بِالثَغرِat the frontier قَدalready عَلِمَknows العَدُوُّthe enemy مُغارُa raiding place
My horsemen defend those whose horses
the enemy knows will raid the frontier.
تَدمىbleed شَكائِمُهاtheir bits وَخَيلُwhile the horses مُجاشِعٍof Mujashi
لَمnot يَندَbecame damp مِنwith عَرَقٍsweat لَهُنَّfor them عِذارُa cheek strap
Their bits run bloody, while Mujashi's horses
have not even dampened their cheek straps with sweat.
إِنّاindeed we وَقَينُكُمُwhile your smith يُرَقِّعُpatches كيرَهُhis bellows
سِرناwe marched لِنَغتَصِبَto overpower المُلوكَkings وَسارواand they marched
While your smith patched his bellows, we
marched to overpower kings, and they marched too.
عَضَّتbit سَلاسِلُناour chains عَلىupon اِبنَيthe two sons مُنذِرٍof Mundhir
حَتّىuntil أَقَرَّacknowledged بِحُكمِناour rule الجَبّارُthe mighty ruler
Our chains gripped the two sons of Mundhir
until the mighty ruler acknowledged our judgment.
وَاِبنَيand the two sons هُجَيمَةَof Hujayma قَدindeed تَرَكناwe left عَنوَةًby force

And the two sons of Hujayma we left by force,
the two sons of Hujayma crying among the spears.
وَرَئيسُand the ruler مَملَكَةٍof a kingdom وَطِئنَwe trod جَبينَهُhis forehead
يَغشىcovers حَواجِبَهُhis eyebrows دَمٌblood وَغُبارُand dust
We trampled the forehead of a ruler,
whose brows were covered in blood and dust.
نَحميwe defend مُخاطَرَةًrisking ourselves عَلىfor أَحسابِناour lineages
كَرُمَare noble الحُماةُthe defenders وَعَزَّتِand are grave الأَخطارُthe dangers
We risk our lives to defend our lineage;
noble are the defenders, and grave are the dangers.
وَإِذاand when النِساءُthe women خَرَجنَwent out غَيرَwithout تَبَرُّزٍdisplaying themselves
غِرناwe felt protective وَعِندَand at خُروجِهِنَّtheir going out نَغارُwe feel protective
And when women went out without displaying themselves,
we felt protective, and at their going out we felt protective.
وَمُجاشِعٌand Mujashi فَضَحواthey disgraced فَوارِسَthe horsemen مالِكٍof Malik
فَرَباso swelled الخَزيرُthe stew وَضُيِّعَand were neglected الأَدبارُthe rearguards
Mujashi disgraced the horsemen of Malik,
so the stew swelled and the rear ranks were neglected.
أَغمامَAghmam لَوif شَهِدَhad witnessed الوَقيطَal-Waqit فَوارِسيmy horsemen

Aghmam, had my horsemen witnessed al-Waqit,
neither Athjal nor Dirar would have been led away in bonds.

Son of smiths, how can you seek our glory
when the mark of the smiths is in your lineage?
