Tuhayya has become like young camels, startled by

    A full-grown stud camel's bellow after a rasping cry.

O Yahya, have I any need of you while you live,

Before a crushing calamity and a swift death?

Tuhayya, through the folly of its judgment, has encamped

In my path—the path of a relentless downpour.

    O Tuhayya, al-Farazdaq has drowned—so know this—

In the sea; then it cast him onto the shore.

Who used to defend your women, O Tuhayya,

Or who would charge back behind the grazing camel herd?

    وَالحَقُّ يَدمَغُ تُرَّهاتِ الباطِلِ

    That is the one whom Malik knows, by your father;

    And truth crushes falsehood's absurdities.

Indeed, our forbearance exceeds the forbearance of others

In excellence; and we outdo the fool in folly.
