راحَdeparted الرِفاقُthe companions وَلَمand did not يَرُحdepart مَرّارُMarrār
وَأَقامَand he remained بَعدَafter الظاعِنينَthose departing وَسارواand they journeyed on
The companions departed, but Marrār did not depart.
My friends have left, but bitterness lingers on,
He remained behind those who left, while they journeyed on.
Remaining after the mourners have gone.
لاmay not تَبعَدَنَّyou be far away وَكُلُّand every حَيٍّliving being هالِكٌdestined to perish
وَلِكُلِّand for every مَصرَعِdeath هالِكٍone who perishes مِقدارُan appointed time
May you not be far away, though every living being must perish,
Do not go far, for all that lives must perish,
And every mortal's death has its appointed time.
And for each fading life, a term is set.
كانَhe was الخِيارَthe finest سِوىexcept for أَبيهِhis father وَعَمِّهِand his paternal uncle
وَلِكُلِّand for every قَومٍpeople سادَةٌleaders وَخِيارُand the finest men
He was the finest, save for his father and his paternal uncle,
The best were none but his father and uncle,
And every people has its leaders and its finest men.
And each people has its leaders and best.
لاnot يُسلِمونَthey abandon لَدىamid الحَوادِثِthe calamities جارَهُمtheir neighbor
وَهُمُand they لِمَنfor whoever خَشِيَfeared الحَوادِثَthe calamities جارُa protecting neighbor
They do not abandon their neighbor amid calamities,
They do not surrender their neighbor in misfortune,
And they are a protecting neighbor to whoever fears calamities.
But are neighbors to those who dread misfortune.
وَأَقولُand I say مِنfrom جَزَعٍanguish وَقَدand already فُتِناwe have been afflicted بِهِthrough him
وَدُموعُand the tears عَينيmy eye فيin الرِداءِthe cloak غِزارُcopious
And I say in anguish, now that we have been afflicted by his loss,
And I say in sorrow, tried as we are by it,
While tears from my eye fall thick upon my cloak,
While copious tears moisten my cloak,
لِلدافِنينَto those burying أَخاthe brother of المَكارِمِnoble deeds وَالنَدىand generosity
لِلَّهِto God (an exclamation) ماwhat ضَمِنَتhave enclosed بِكَwith you الأَحجارُthe stones
To those burying the brother of noble deeds and generosity:
For those burying the brother of generosity and bounty,
By God, how great is what the stones have enclosed with you!
By God, the stones have guaranteed you nothing.
لَمّاwhen غَدَواthey set out in the morning بِأَغَرَّwith a radiant man أَروَعَawe-inspiring ماجِدٍnoble

When they set out in the morning with a radiant, awe-inspiring, noble man,
When they set out in the tenderest dawn,
Like the full moon, through whom prayers are made for rain,
Like the moon whose rain is sought,
كادَتnearly تَقَطَّعُbe torn apart عِندَat ذَلِكَthat حَسرَةًfrom grief
نَفسيmy soul وَقَدand already بَعُدَhad grown distant الغَداةَthat morning مَزارُa place of visitation
At that moment, almost torn apart by grief
My soul almost ruptured with grief
Was my soul, his resting place grown distant that morning.
When the morning excursion became but a tomb visit.
صَلّىmay bless الإِلَهُGod عَلَيكَupon you مِنas ذيone possessing حُفرَةٍa grave
خَلَتِbecame empty الدِيارُthe dwellings لَهُfor him فَهُنَّso they are قِفارُdesolate wastes
May God bless you, dweller in a grave,
May God pray upon you from one with a grave,
Whose dwellings lie empty, now desolate wastes.
The houses emptied for him, now desolate ruins,
وَسَقاكَand may it water you مِنfrom نَوءِstellar rain season الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades عارِضٌa rain cloud

And may a cloud from the Pleiades' rain season water you,
And give you to drink from the starry Pleiades,
From which a steady, abundant rain pours down.
From which pours a constant, flowing spring.
