تُرَوِّعُنا الجَنائِزُ مُقبِلاتٍ

فَنَلهو حينَ تَذهَبُ مُدبِراتِ

Funeral processions frighten us as they approach,

The approaching funerals frighten us

Then we amuse ourselves as they turn and depart,

So we frolic when they pass by

كَرَوعَةِ هَجمَةٍ لَمغارِ سَبعٍ

كَرَوعَةِ هَجمَةٍ لَمغارِ سَبعٍ

فَلَمّا غابَ عادَت رائِعاتِ

فَلَمّا غابَ عادَت رائِعاتِ

Like a camel herd's fright at a predator's attack;

Like the fright of a sudden lion attack

Then, when it vanished, they returned, frightened.

But when it's gone we're carefree again
