خَنازيرَ ناموا عَنِ المَكرُماتِ

خَنازيرَ ناموا عَنِ المَكرُماتِ

فَنَبَّهَهُم قَدَرٌ لَم يَنَمِ

فَنَبَّهَهُم قَدَرٌ لَم يَنَمِ

Swine—they slept, heedless of noble deeds;

Swine—they slept heedless of noble deeds;

Then a fate that had never slept awakened them.

then a fate that did not sleep awakened them.

فَيا قُبحَهُم في الَّذي خُوِّلوا

فَيا قُبحَهُم في الَّذي خُوِّلوا

وَيا حُسنَهُم في زَوالِ النِعَمِ

وَيا حُسنَهُم في زَوالِ النِعَمِ

How ugly they are amid what they were granted—

So how ugly they are in what they were granted,

And how fine they look as blessings pass away!

and how beautiful they are when blessings vanish!
