Will you not remember kinship, or lend me
a virtue of yours, from a noble and generous character?
لَكُمyou have مِثلُthe like of كَفَّيthe two hands of خالِدٍKhalid حينَwhen يَشتَريhe buys

فَإِنso if يَكُis قَيديmy fetter رَدَّchecked هَمّيmy ambition فَرُبَّماthen often

If my fetters have checked my ambition, often
I have reached the farthest ends of distant ambitions,
مِنَamong الحامِلاتِthe bearers of الحَمدِpraise لَمّاwhen تَكَشَّفَتbecame uncovered

among the praise-bearing ones, when they bared
their trailing hems and became forbidding to the supplicant.
فَهَلso is there لِاِبنِfor the son of عَبدِAbd (servant of) اللَهِAllah (God) فيinterest in شاكِرٍa grateful man لَهُto him

Would Ibn Abd Allah favor one grateful to him,
praising your kindness in releasing both his fetters?
وَماand there is no مِنany بَلاءٍaffliction غَيرَexcept كُلِّevery عَشِيَّةٍevening
وَكُلِّand every صَباحٍmorning زائِدٍincreasing غَيرِnot عائِدِreceding
There is no affliction but, every evening
and every morning, it grows, never receding.

The smith says to me, "Are you standing?"
Yet I am only like another man sitting.
كَأَنّيas though I حَروريa Haruri ضَلَّهُloomed over him (unclear reading) فَوقَabove كَعبَةٍan ankle-bone
ثَلاثونَthirty قَيناًsmiths مِنfrom صَريمٍSarim وَكايِدِand Ka'id
As though I were a Haruri, over whose ankle loomed
thirty smiths from Sarim and Ka'id.
وَماand not إِنindeed بِدينٍfor religion ظاهَرواthey piled layers فَوقَover ساقِهِhis leg

It was not on religious grounds that they piled irons on his leg,
and they knew that my faith was not exhausted.
وَيَرويand he recites عَلَيَّagainst me الشِعرَpoetry ماnot أَناI قُلتُهُuttered it
كَمُعتَرِضٍlike one confronting لِلريحِagainst the wind بَينَamong الطَرائِدِhunted beasts
And he recites against me verses I never uttered,
like one confronting the wind among the hunted beasts.
