O Taym, those who offer hospitality in hard times are not

Of Taym, nor are those who defend in times of crisis.

And dogs walk beside Taym when its men go out at dawn,

And Taym has not marched in the shade of fluttering banners.

And Taym is abased at the gates of the pens,

And Taym cannot find its way to the pavilion’s entrance.

Nor was the Taymi, in pre-Islamic days, adept

At drinking with the mighty ruler upon the cushions.

Our steeds race along the dreaded frontier,

While Taym sips, hunched over the bowls.

And you, O Taym—as you well know—are not

The horsemen of the morning’s surging raids.
