It has indeed pleased me that Mujashi' counts nothing
I am glad that you do not count as valorous
Among its boasts but the hamstringing of an old she-camel at Saw'ar.
Except the slitting of Naab’s girth with a sword
أَنابُكَis it your old she-camel? أَمor قَومٌa people تَفُضُّshatter سُيوفُهُمtheir swords

Is it your old she-camel, or men whose swords shatter
Are you attacking or a people whose swords
Upon the skulls, both folds of the arrogant man's helmet?
Flow over the skulls - the eggs of the tyrant
لَعَمريby my life لَنِعمَexcellent indeed are المُستَجارونَthose sought for protection نَهشَلٌNahshal
وَحَيُّand a tribe القِرىhospitality لِلطارِقِfor the night visitor المُتَنَوِّرِseeking firelight
By my life, Nahshal are indeed excellent protectors,
By my life, how good are the protected - Nahshal
And a hospitable tribe for the night visitor seeking firelight.
The living quarter for the polished raider
فَوارِسُhorsemen لاnot يَدعونَthey call يالَO, help! Mujashi'

Horsemen who do not call on Mujashi' for help,
Horsemen do not call O valorous one
When she of the curtained canopy steps into the open.
When the train of the perfumed litter comes out

By my life, Hilal ibn 'Amir was indeed slain
By my life, Hilal son of Aamir had bloodied
At the water basin of al-Mirba', by al-Mujashshar's kinsmen.
The kin of Majasher with the width of the spear
وَماand not زِلتَyou have ceased مُذsince لَمdid not تَستَجِبanswer لَكَto you نَهشَلٌNahshal

And ever since Nahshal did not answer you, you have kept
And since Nahshal did not answer your call
Encountering unmixed humiliation—so be patient.
You keep meeting calamity with patience
وَعافَتand spurned بَنوthe sons of شَيبانَShayban حَوضَthe pool of مُجاشِعٍMujashi'

And the sons of Shayban have spurned the pool of Mujashi',
The clan of Shayban spared Majasher’s basin
And Shayban are people of clear water, unmuddied.
And Shayban are the unsullied people

Had Nahshal grown angry over the matter of Hadra',
Had Nahshal got angry about Hadra’s affair
They would have assailed her with black steeds, or raided her with eagles.
They would have poisoned it or raided it with eagles

Had the neighbor of Mujashi' settled among Riyah,
Had a neighbor sought shelter in Majasher’s winds
He would not have spent the night a hostage to the deep-dug well.
He would not have spent the night a captive’s pledge

Nor did knots of hope lure them away from their vengeance,
Neither their vengeance’s knotted rope of parting
And there is no pledge but that of a neighbor ready for action.
Nor any knot but a knot of a neighbor girded

And indeed it has pleased me that Mujashi' counts nothing
I am glad that you do not count as glorious, Majasher
Among its glories but the hamstringing of an old she-camel at Saw'ar.
Except the slitting of Naab’s girth with a sword
وَأَنتُمand you قُيونٌsmiths تَصلُقونَyou hammer out سُيوفَناour swords

And you are smiths, hammering out our swords,
While you are spined arrows that smooth our swords
While with them we stand defiant on every renowned day of battle.
With which we disobey every blossoming day

Horsemen who charge again and again into the thick of battle,
Horsemen, repeaters in the zeal of the fray
When she of the curtained canopy comes out.
When the train of the perfumed litter comes out
