إِنَّindeed بِلالاًBilal لَمdid not تَشِنهُdisgrace him أُمُّهُhis mother
إِنَّ بِلالاً لَم تَشِنهُ أُمُّهُ
لَمdid not يَتَناسَبshare kinship خالُهُhis maternal uncle وَعَمُّهُand his paternal uncle
لَم يَتَناسَب خالُهُ وَعَمُّهُ
Indeed, Bilal's mother brought him no disgrace.
His maternal and paternal uncles were not related.
يَشفيcures الصُداعَheadache ريحُهُhis scent وَشَمُّهُand smelling him
يَشفي الصُداعَ ريحُهُ وَشَمُّهُ
وَيُذهِبُand dispels الهُمومُworries عَنيfrom me ضَمُّهُhis embrace
وَيُذهِبُ الهُمومُ عَني ضَمُّهُ
His fragrance and breathing it in cure headaches.
And his embrace drives my worries away.
كَأَنَّas though ريحَthe scent المِسكِof musk مُستَحَمَّهُhis bath
كَأَنَّ ريحَ المِسكِ مُستَحَمَّهُ
ماnot يَنبَغيis fitting لِلمُسلِمينَfor Muslims ذَمُّهُdisparaging him
ما يَنبَغي لِلمُسلِمينَ ذَمُّهُ
It is as though the scent of musk were his bath.
It is not fitting for Muslims to disparage him.
يُمضيhe carries through الأُمورَaffairs وَهوَwhile he is سامٍlofty هَمَّهُhis ambition
يُمضي الأُمورَ وَهوَ سامٍ هَمَّهُ
بَحرُa sea بُحورٍof seas واسِعٌvast مَجَمُّهُhis reservoir
بَحرُ بُحورٍ واسِعٌ مَجَمُّهُ
He carries affairs through, lofty in his ambition.
A sea among seas, vast is his reservoir.
يُفَرِّجُhe clears up الأَمرَthe matter وَلاand does not يَغُمُّهُcloud it
يُفَرِّجُ الأَمرَ وَلا يَغُمُّهُ
فَنَفسُهُso his soul نَفسيmy soul وَسَمّيand my poison سَمُّهُhis poison
فَنَفسُهُ نَفسي وَسَمّي سَمُّهُ
He clears up a matter and does not cloud it.
So his soul is my soul, and my poison is his poison.
