عَجِبتُI marveled لِرَحلٍat a saddle مِنfrom عَدِيِّʿAdi مُشَمَّسٍleft in the sun
وَفيand on أَيِّwhich يَومٍday لَمdid not تَشَمَّسbe exposed to the sun رِحالُهاher saddles
I marveled at a saddle of ʿAdi left in the sun;
yet on what day were her saddles not left in the sun?
وَفيمَand in what عَدِيٌّʿAdi عِندَbeside تَيمٍTaym مِنَof العُلىlofty rank
وَأَيّامِناand our battle-days اللاتيwhich يُعَدُّare reckoned فَعالُهاtheir exploits
What share has ʿAdi beside Taym in lofty rank,
and in our battle-days, whose exploits are reckoned?
مَدَدتَyou stretched out بِكَفٍّwith a palm مِنfrom عَدِيٍّʿAdi قَصيرَةٍshort
لِتُدرِكَto reach مِنof زَيدٍZayd يَداًa hand لاnot تَنالُهاyou attain it
You reached out with a short hand from ʿAdi,
to reach a hand of Zayd's beyond your grasp.

مَساعِيَexploits قَومٍa people لَيسَis not مِنكَfrom you سِجالُهاtheir contests
My uncle's counsel concerning a close friend's son: do not seek
the exploits of a people whose contests are beyond you.
يُماشيwalks beside عَدِيّاًʿAdi لُؤمُهاher baseness ماnot تُجِنُّهُshe conceals it
مِنَfrom الناسِpeople ماas long as ماشَتwalks beside عَدِيّاًʿAdi ظِلالُهاher shadows
Her baseness walks beside ʿAdi; she does not hide it
from people, so long as her shadows walk beside ʿAdi.
فَقُلso tell لِعَدِيٍّto ʿAdi تَستَعِنlet her seek help بِنِسائِهاfrom her women
عَلِيَّagainst me فَقَدfor indeed أَعياhave failed عَدِيّاًʿAdi رِجالُهاher men
So tell ʿAdi to seek her women's help
against me, for her men have failed ʿAdi.
أَذاO Dhu الرُمَal-Rumma قَدindeed قَلَّدتَyou have collared قَومَكَyour people رُمَّةًa worn-out rope

O Dhu al-Rumma, you have hung a worn-out rope about your people's necks,
slow to come undone in the hands of those who unbind.
تَرىyou see اللُؤمَbaseness ماas long as عاشَتlives عَدِيٌّʿAdi مُخَلَّداًmade immortal

سَرابيلُهاher tunics مِنهُof it وَمِنهُand of it نِعالُهاher sandals
You will see baseness immortal so long as ʿAdi lives:
her tunics are made of it, and of it are her sandals.
