حَيِّgreet الغَداةَthis morning بِرامَةَat Rama الأَطلالاthe ruins
رَسماًa trace تَحَمَّلَdeparted أَهلُهُits people فَأَحالاand it grew desolate
Greet the ruins at Rama this morning,
In the early dawn, I recalled the ruins of Brammah
a trace whose people departed, and it grew desolate.
Whose inhabitants bore adversities as fate
إِنَّindeed السَوارِيَthe night rains وَالغَوادِيَand the morning rains غادَرَتhave left
لِلريحِfor the wind مُختَرَقاًa passage بِهِtherein وَمَجالاand room to roam
The night rains and morning rains have left
The valleys and meadows have fled
a passage there for the wind, and room to roam.
Leaving open fields for the wind and its expanse
لَمnot أَلْقَI have found مِثلَكَlike you بَعدَafter عَهدِكَknowing you مَنزِلاًa dwelling
فَسُقيتَso may you be watered مِنfrom سَبَلِthe rainstreams of السِماكِal-Simak سِجالاbrimming bucketfuls
I have found no dwelling like you since the days I knew you;
I have not found a dwelling like yours after your loss
so may al-Simak's rains drench you in brimming bucketfuls.
And you were irrigated by the rain gushing forth
أَصبَحتَyou became بَعدَafter جَميعِall أَهلِكَyour people دِمنَةًa dung-marked ruin
قَفراًdeserted وَكُنتَand you were مَرَبَّةًan inhabited place مِحلالاmuch dwelt in
After all your people left, you became a dung-marked ruin,
After all your people, you became a mound of ruins
a wasteland, though you had been a settled, much-inhabited home.
Once a populated settlement, now desolate and bare
وَلَقَدand indeed عَجِبتُI marveled مِنَat الدِيارِthe dwellings وَأَهلِهاand their people
وَالدَهرِand Time كَيفَhow يُبَدِّلُit replaces الأَبدالاsuccessors
And I have indeed marveled at dwellings and their people,
I am amazed how the abodes and their people change
and at Time—how it replaces one lot with another!
And how time alters one thing into another
وَرَأَيتَand you saw راحِلَةَthe riding-camel of الصِباyouth قَدalready أَقصَرَتheld back
بَعدَafter الوَجيفِrapid trotting وَمَلَّتِand grew weary of التِرحالاtraveling
And you have seen youth's riding-camel hold back
I saw the she-camel of youth had shortened her stride
after rapid trotting, and grow weary of traveling.
After vigour and the toil of travel
إِنَّindeed الظَعائِنَthe women in litters يَومَon the day of بُرقَةِthe stony tract of عاقِلٍ'Aqil

Indeed, the women in their litters, on the day at Burqat 'Aqil,
The resolve of the virtuous on the day of Burqah
roused an ailing man and worsened his derangement.
Had become diseased, so ignorance increased
طَرِبَstirred with longing الفُؤادُthe heart لِذِكرِهِنَّat their memory وَقَدand already مَضَتhad passed

بِاللَيلِby night أَجنِحَةُthe wings of النُجومِthe stars فَمالاand it inclined
The heart stirred with longing at their memory, though already
My heart quivered remembering them after they passed
the stars' wings had passed through the night, and the heart inclined.
While the wings of the stars in the night faded
يَجعَلنَthey keep مَدفَعَthe outlet of عاقِلَينِ'Aqilayn أَيامِناًon the right
وَجَعَلنَand they set أَمعَزَthe stony ground of رامَتَينِRamatayn شِمالاon the left
They keep the outlet of 'Aqilayn to their right,
They made the defence of our days a few years
and set Ramatayn's stony ground to their left.
And made the lifespan of goats in the left-hand
لاnot يَتَّصِلنَthey claim kinship إِذاwhen اِفتَخَرنَthey boast بِتَغلِبٍwith Taghlib
وَرُزِقنَand were granted زُخرُفَthe splendor of نِعمَةٍprosperity وَجَمالاand beauty
When they boast, they claim no kinship with Taghlib,
They never unite when they boast of victory
and were granted luxury's splendor and beauty.
And enjoy the embellishment of prosperity and beauty

Umm Hazra's apparition visited late at night,
The specter crept furtively to Umm Hazrah
and how dear a vision was that visiting phantom!
And embraced the slender ghost closely

Oh, would that I knew, on the day at Darat Sulsul:
I wonder on the day of exhorting Sulsal
do you wish to cut me off, or merely to play coy?
Whether you wanted my ruin or my guidance
لَوif أَنَّthat عُصمَthe white-legged ibex of عَمايَتَينِ'Amayatayn وَيَذبُلٍand Yadhbul

If the white-legged ibex of 'Amayatayn and Yadhbul
If the chastity of Uyaynah and Yathbul had heard
heard your speech, it would bring the ibex down.
Your talk, it would have collapsed the mountain tops
حُيِّيتِmay you be greeted لَستِyou are not غَداًtomorrow لَهُنَّto them بِصاحِبٍa companion

Greetings to you! Tomorrow you will not be their companion
You greeted in the morning those with no friend
on Wajra's rugged ridge, as they trot in haste.
When the young she-camels neigh and the cattle bellow
أَجهَضنَthey miscarried مُعجَلَةٌprematurely لِسِتَّةِat six أَشهُرٍmonths

They miscarried prematurely at six months,
Some miscarried at six months
and were fitted with fresh soles after their own wore out.
And others lost their slippers as they walked

When daylight is short and its shadows contract
and the mounts flagged from weariness and exhaustion,
And the tired she-camel is listless and languid

the mounts hastened with every fair-skinned, gaunt rider,
The she-camel raises the hem of each emaciated man
wearing a threadbare shirt, whom you would think swaggering.
Whose shirt tails sway as he struts proudly
إِنّيindeed I جُعِلتُwas made فَلَنso I shall not أُعافيspare تَغلِباًTaghlib

I was made—and I shall not spare Taghlib—
I am destined so I will never pardon the oppressors
a punishment and a deterrent for wrongdoers.
And will be a punishment and vengeance upon the wrongdoers
قَبَحَmay he disfigure الإِلَهُGod وُجوهَthe faces of تَغلِبَTaghlib إِنَّهاindeed they

May God disfigure Taghlib's faces; indeed, they
Cursed is Tughlib in the sight of God
have become contemptible to me, muzzles and moustaches alike.
They have become despicable to me, both horses and men
قَبَحَmay he disfigure الإِلَهُGod وُجوهَthe faces of تَغلِبَTaghlib كُلَّماwhenever

May God disfigure Taghlib's faces whenever
Cursed is Tughlib whenever pilgrims shout and say:
the pilgrims raise their arms and loudly proclaim God's greatness.
"God is great", performing their rights

They worshiped the cross and disbelieved in Muhammad,
They worshipped the cross and denied Muhammad
and in Gabriel, and denied Michael.
And rejected Gabriel and Michael as well

And when a Taghlibi clears his throat to offer hospitality,
When the Tughlibi sniffs, mocking settlements
he scratches his arse and quotes proverbs.
He itches his beard and spouts proverbs

Did you forget your day at the island, after
its aftermath proved a calamity for you?
Its consequences were calamitous upon you

Qays's defenders drove their horses against you,
The cavalry of Qais attacked you
shaggy and grim-faced, bearing champions.
Disheveled and frowning, bearing warriors

Ever since them, you have kept taking everything
You still think, after them, every group is an army
for horses charging against you, and men.
Marching against you with men and horses

Zufar the chief, Abu al-Hudhayl, destroyed you,
The roar of the chief Abul Huthayl destroyed you
then captured the women and secured the wealth.
He captured the women and seized the wealth

Al-Ukhaytil said, when he saw their banners:
When Ukhaydir saw their standards, he said
'O Mar Sergius, we want no fighting!'
"O disgraceful Sergius, we want no fighting!"
هَلّاwhy did you not سَأَلتَask غُثاءَthe flotsam of دِجلَةَthe Tigris عَنكُمُabout yourselves

Why did you not ask the Tigris's flotsam about yourselves,
Why not ask the shallows of the Tigris about you
while the limping hyenas gathered the limbs?
Where corpses are collected, part by part

Al-Ukhaytil abandoned his mother, as though she were
Ukhaydir left his mother as if she was
the track of a water-drawing camel turning pulley wheels.
A camel for hire, directing customers

And al-Ukhaytil hoped, through the folly of his judgment,
Ukhaydir hoped foolishly
for what neither he nor a father of his could attain.
For what would never be, an impossible dream

Clear the road: you have seen our camel-stallions
"Make way, for you have seen our destruction
repel other stallions in fury and assault.
Repelling destruction, writhing in anguish"

My Tamim has attained perfection, O al-Ukhaytil; gird yourself!
"It is over, Ukhaydir, so prepare yourself"
Al-Ukhaytil was disgraced when I spoke and he spoke.
I said, and Ukhaydir was shamed into silence

If Khindif's pillars jostled
If the walls of Kindah had collided
a solid mountain among the mountains, it would shift.
With an impenetrable mountain, it would be leveled

Indeed, the rhymes' cord has been twisted tight
For the rhyme's bitterness is commanded
for the sons of Fadawkas, when they cut off 'Iqal's nose.
For Bani Fudawks when their reason was severed

Before reaching me, you met a company from Khuzayma,
You met a group of Khuzaimah below me
and long camel throat-sacs swelling proudly over you.
Whose towering heights humbled you

Khuzayma went forth with steeds that seemed
Khuzaimah rode out on steeds as if they were
like eagles of a dark rain-cloud, shaking off fine rain.
Tame hawks alighting softly on the dunes

Indeed, thus we prepare them for the like of that,
That is how we prepare for the likes of that
given milk to drink and clad in horse-blankets.
Fed milk and donning ornate saddle-cloths

You did not meet horsemen of mine in battle
unsteady when mounted, nor inept in the saddle.
Inclining to you, or even glancing your way

They raided Taghlib's women at dawn and captured them,
They bid farewell to the women of Tughlib and captured them
and al-Hudhayl saw squadrons as they came to water.
And Huthayl saw their white thighs

Qays and Khindif, if you count their deeds,
Qais and Kindah, if you count their deeds
are better and nobler in deeds than your father.
Are better and nobler than those of your father

If they forbid you, you will be forbidden to enemies
or, if they declare you lawful, you will surely be eaten lawfully.
Or if they permit you, you will be eaten lawfully

Or descend in the shade from a hillock?

Surely our dwelling is nobler among dwellings
For we are nobler in abode and higher in the sky
than yours, and our mountains rise higher into the sky.
With mountains taller than yours

We led Khuzayma by force, as you know,
We guided Khuzaimah, as you know by force
and al-Hudhayl spent the winter struggling with fetters.
And Huthayl wrung his hands in shackles
وَرَأَتand saw حُسَينَةُHusayna بِالعَدابِat the sand's edge فَوارِسيmy horsemen

Husainah saw my horsemen grasp
gathering plunder and dividing spoils.
The spoils and divide the booty

And if Taghlib gathered its ancestral honors,
If the clans of Tughlib gathered their allies
on the day of comparison, they would not weigh a mithqal.
On the day of rivalry, they would not equal an atom

Do not seek in-laws from Tughlib
for the Zanj are nobler maternal uncles than they.
For even Africans are nobler in-laws than them
