Greet the dwellings at the valley bends, then in the valley,
The abodes greeted with tree trunks, then the valley
The valley of al-Munifa, when she appeared with the desert folk.
The valley of Al-Munifa as it appears with the bedouin lands

When they brought near great mature camels, their elbows bowed outward,
When they brought many camels, their caravan companions
Their humps slanting, as they prepared to journey upland.
The camel litters leaned as they prepared for the ascent

When they scatter pebbles from stony ground in the midday heat,
When the bleating mountain goats crossed the stony ground
They stretch out their necks with supple upper forelegs.
Extending their udders in gentle throbs

They reach al-Ghari on their forelegs and hindlegs,
The she-camels come on their hands and feet
As though they were the roaming ostriches of the wilderness.
As if they were ostriches of the barren desert

I am the defender when the horses are made to rear
I am the protector when the horses sniff
By the impact of lances, with saddles above felt pads,
The bells fall on saddles over soft coats

With every tawny spear from al-Khatt thrust forward
With every dark, long-necked camel
By warriors’ hands, withdrawing it and driving it in.
The hands of the drivers prod and guide

I take refuge in a solid, firmly rooted rock,
I take refuge in a deaf, rugged boulder
Which makes smooth stones rebound when a thrower pelts its rock.
That calls to pilgrims when its rocky slopes tumble down
نُبِّئتُI was told ظَرباًẒarb مُعِدّاًreadying ليfor me مَرامِيَهُhis missiles

I was told that Ẓarb was readying his missiles for me.
I was told of a kept secret, its arrows intended for me
O Ẓarb, you shoot, yet take no prey.
Oh secret, you are a willful, uncaptured gazelle

What think you of the sons of Maytha, if they take fright
What did you think of Bani Maytha that they panicked
At night, and the valley’s serpent charges upon them?
At night when the valley's snake startled them

Abu Layla rushes at me to kill me,
Abu Layla runs to kill me unjustly
In foolish hostility against me, though he has not avenged Shaddad.
In ignorance of me, and without avenging Shaddad

The son of Hindaba remained crouched upon the damp earth,
The son of Hindabah lingered in wealth
Drawing water for a smith, not summoned to lend aid.
Quenching his thirst but not called to bring joy

Sleep on, for disgrace has already spent the night in your well,
Sleep, for shame has spent the night in your hearts
Since you saw nothing of your brother but his bodily remains.
When you did not see anything of your brother but skin

O ʿUqb, O son of Sunayʿ, you have among you
Oh Ukbah, son of Sunay`, you have with you
No refuge for seekers of bounty, nor a banner-bearer marching at dawn.
Neither shelter for the exiled nor the departing flag

Never trust the sons of Maytha, for they are
Do not feel safe from Bani Maytha, for they
Of every swollen-flanked, ever-shirking sort.
Are deadly snakes from every twisting coil

O ʿUqb, O son of Sunayʿ, after your words,
After your words, Oh Ukbah son of Sunay`
Indeed, the assault I have for you lies in ambush.
The devious adder lies in wait for me

Recite against me, and please your friend at my expense,
Tell tales about me and make me your friend
And listen closely, O sons of Maytha, to my recitation.
And listen, O Bani Maytha, to my recital
