أَلاcome! حَيِّgreet الدِيارَthe dwellings وَإِنand even if تَعَفَّتthey have been effaced
وَقَدand indeed ذَكَّرنَthey have reminded عَهدَكَyour former days بِالخَميلِat al-Khamil
Come, greet the dwellings, though they have been effaced,
O dweller of the abodes, though they are desolate,
And they have reminded you of your former days at al-Khamil.
And your abode reminded us of intimacy,
وَكَمand how many لَكَof yours بِالمُجَيمِرِat al-Mujaymir مِنof مَحَلٍّa campsite
وَبِالعَزّافِand at al-Azzaf مِنof طَلَلٍa ruin مُحيلِtimeworn
And how many campsites you had at al-Mujaymir,
And you have many a station at Al-Mujaymir,
And how many timeworn ruins at al-Azzaf!
And at Al-'Azzaf, a ruined encampment.
وَقَدand indeed خَلَتِare empty الطُلولُthe ruins مِنof آلِthe people of لَيلىLayla
فَماso what لَكَwith you لاnot تُفيقُyou recover your senses عَنِfrom الطُلولِthe ruins
And the ruins are empty of Layla's people;
The night companions have departed from Layla's family,
So why do you not rouse yourself from thoughts of the ruins?
So why do you not awaken from night companions?
وَإِنand though قالَsay العَواذِلُthe reproachers قَدindeed شَجاهُhas grieved him
مَحَلُّthe campsite of الحَيِّthe tribe مِنon لَبَبِthe front slope of الأَميلِal-Amil
And though the reproachers say, 'He has been grieved
And if the censurers say you are love-smitten,
By the tribe's campsite on the front slope of al-Amil.'
The abode of the living is for intimate friendship.
لَقَدindeed شَعَفَseared with love الفُؤادَthe heart غَداةَon the morning of رَهبىRahba
تَفَرُّقُthe parting نِيَّةِthe intended direction of travel الأَنَسِthe familiar folk الحُلولِencamped
Indeed, the heart was seared with love on the morning at Rahba,
My heart was captivated one morning by yearning,
By the parting of the familiar folk encamped there, each bound a different way.
When the intent of companionship was disrupted.
إِذاwhen رَحَلواthey depart جَزِعتَyou grieve وَإِنand if أَقامواthey stay
فَماthen what يُجديavails المُقامُstaying علىagainst الرَحيلِdeparture
When they depart, you grieve; and if they stay,
You are anguished if they depart and if they stay,
What good is staying in the face of departure?
So staying does not avail against departing.
أَخِلّايَmy friends الكِرامُthe noble سِوىexcept for سَدوسٍSadus
وَماand not ليfor me فيamong سَدوسٍSadus مِنany خَليلِclose friend
My friends are noble, except for Sadus;
I have no intimate friend save for Sedous,
And I have no close friend among Sadus.
And I have no friend in Sedous.
إِذاif أَنزَلتَyou set down رَحلَكَyour saddle فيamong سَدوسٍSadus
فَقَدthen indeed أُنزِلتَyou have been placed مَنزِلَةَthe station of الذَليلِthe abased
If you set down your saddle among Sadus,
If you camp in Sedous,
Then you have been placed in the station of the abased.
You have camped in a position of disgrace.
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتknows سَدوسٌSadus أَنَّthat فيهاwithin it
مَنارَthe beacons of اللُؤمِbaseness واضِحَةَclear السَبيلِthe path
And Sadus knows well that within it
And Sedous knows that in it
Are the beacons of baseness, their path plain to see.
Are manifest the fires of cowardice.
فَماso not أَعطَتhas given سَدوسٌSadus مِنany كَثيرٍlarge amount
وَلاand not حامَتhas defended سَدوسٌSadus عَنin defense of قَليلِa little
So Sadus has not given much,
Sedous did not give much,
Nor has Sadus defended even a little.
Nor did Sedous withhold little.
