أَمسىbecame by evening خَليطُكَyour companions قَدalready أَجَدَّbecame earnest about فِراقاparting
هاجَstirred الحَزينَthe sorrowful one وَذَكَّرَand brought to mind الأَشواقاthe longings
By evening your companions had resolved to part,
Stirring the sorrowful one and reawakening longings.
هَلdo تُبصِرانِyou two see ظَعائِناًwomen in howdahs بِعُنَيزَةٍat ʿUnayzah
أَمor هَلdo تَقولُyou think لَناfor us بِهِنَّwith them لَحاقاcatching up
Do you two see the women in howdahs at ʿUnayzah?
Or do you think we can catch up with them?
حَثَّurged on الحُداةُthe camel-drivers بِهِمwith them وَراءَbehind حُمولِهِمtheir laden camels

The camel-drivers urged them on behind their laden beasts,
On mature camels pressing boldly onward, not three-year-olds.
ياoh رُبَّmany a قائِلَةٍwoman speaking تَقولُsays وَقائِلٍand a man speaking
أَسُراقَO Suraqa إِنَّكَyou indeed قَدalready خَزيتَhave been disgraced سُراقاSuraqa
Oh, many a woman says, and many a man:
“O Suraqa, you have indeed been disgraced, Suraqa!”
إِنَّindeed الَّذينَthose who عَوَواhowled عُواءَكَyour howling قَدalready لَقواhave encountered
مِنّيfrom me صَواعِقَthunderbolts تُخضِعُmake bow الأَعناقاthe necks
Those who howled like you have indeed faced
Thunderbolts from me that force necks to bow.
فَإِذاso when لَقيتَyou meet مُجَيلِساًa little gathering مِنfrom بارِقٍBariq
لاقَيتَyou encounter أَطبَعَthe foulest مَجلِسٍgathering أَخلاقاin character
So when you meet a little gathering from Bariq,
You meet a company of the foulest character:
الناقِصينَthose falling short إِذاwhen يُعَدُّare counted حَصاهُمُtheir pebbles
وَالجامِعينَand those combining مَذَلَّةًabasement وَنِفاقاand hypocrisy
Who fall short when their pebbles are counted,
And combine abasement with hypocrisy.
وَلَقَدand indeed هَمَمتُI intended بِأَنto أُدَمِّرَI destroy بارِقاًBariq
فَرَقَبتُbut I had regard for فيهِمin their case عَمَّناour paternal uncle إِسحاقاIshaq
And I had indeed intended to destroy Bariq,
But spared them out of regard for our uncle Ishaq.
