Al-Farazdaq visited the people of Hijaz
But he found no favor among them and was not praised.
But gained no praise or honor among them

And you disgraced your people at Al-Hatim
And between the two Baqi tracts and al-Gharqad.
And between the two cemeteries and Al-Gharqad

We found Al-Farazdaq in the two seasons
Foul in his dealings and his public presence.
Evil in his ways and appearance

Rightly are you banished from the mosque.
Your rights and expelled you from the mosque

فَقالواso they said ضَلِلتَyou went astray وَلَمand did not تَهتَدِfind guidance
And you likened yourself to the most wretched of Thamud,
And you likened yourself to the wretched Thamud
So they said, 'You went astray and found no guidance.'
So they said you are misguided and not guided

ثَلاثَthree لَيالٍnights إِلىuntil المَوعِدِthe appointed time
And when the punishment descended, they were granted respite:
And they were given respite when the torment came
Three nights until the appointed time.
Three nights until the appointed time

And you likened yourself to the donkey's glans,
And you likened yourself to the braying donkey
Foul in its tethering-stalls and tether-swivel.
Evil in its voice and braying

Distant in kinship from Ma'bad.
Distant in lineage from Ma'bad

وَأَينَand where سُهَيلٌSuhayl مِنَfrom الفَرقَدِal-Farqad
Do you count the bellows-man among Malik's people?
Will you equate the noble to Malik?
And how far is Suhayl from al-Farqad!
And where is Suhayl from the little stars?
وَشَرُّand the worst of الفِلاءِfoals اِبنُson of حوقِthe glans of الحِمارِthe donkey

And the worst of foals is the son of the donkey's glans;
The worst scum is the son of the braying donkey
And you find Qufayra lying in wait.
Who met Qufayrah at the observatory
وَعِرقُand the root of الفَرَزدَقِal-Farazdaq شَرُّthe worst of العُروقِroots
خَبيثُfoul in الثَرىthe soil كابِيُfailing to kindle الأَزنُدِthe fire-sticks
And al-Farazdaq's root is the worst of roots,
The lineage of Al-Farazdaq is the worst lineage
Foul in its soil, with fire-sticks that yield no spark.
A despicable clan, crooked like a bow

And Jubayr gave Ghalib a charge,
And Jubayr advised Ghalib
The charge of a hard-pressed kinsman:
The advice of a caring relative

He said, 'Be gentle in bending the iron band,
So he said, "Be gentle with my tired companion
And scraping the awls with the file.'
And stir the drinking bowl with the iron rod

You found the people of Minqar at night
The weapon of your propped-up slain man.
With the weapons of your killed victim

فَلَيتَso would that الفَرَزدَقَal-Farazdaq لَمhad not يولَدِbeen born
Nawar says, 'You have disgraced the smiths;
Nuwar says you exposed the urns
Would that al-Farazdaq had never been born!'
If only Al-Farazdaq was never born
وَقالَتand she said بِذيat Dhu حَومَلٍHawmal وَالرِماحِby the spears

شَهِدتَyou were present وَلَيتَكَand would that you لَمhad not تَشهَدِbeen present
And at Dhu Hawmal she said, 'By the spears,
And she said, "By the one with birthmarks and spears
You were there—would that you had not been!'
You witnessed, I wish you never witnessed"

And al-Farazdaq won a pair of tongs,
And Al-Farazdaq won the two prize camels
And a pack-load of black charcoal.
And a prize camel from the black camels

So patch your grandfather's bellows,
So mend your grandfather's waterskins
And mend your gear; do not spoil it.
And fix your belongings, do not ruin them
وَأَدنِand bring close العَلاةَthe anvil وَأَدنِand bring close القَدومَthe adze

وَوَسِّعand make room لِكيرِكَfor your bellows فيat المَقعَدِthe seat
Bring the anvil close, and bring the adze close,
And shorten the tent pegs and arrive later
And make room at your seat for your bellows.
And make space for your noble guest in his seat
قَرَنتَyou bound البَعيثَal-Ba'ith إِلىto ذيthe man of الصَليبِthe cross
مَعَwith القَينِthe smith فيin المَرَسِthe rope المُحصَدِtightly twisted
You bound al-Ba'ith to the man of the cross,
You paired Al-Ba'ith to the one with the cross
With the smith, in tightly twisted rope.
With Al-Qayn in the plowed, harvested field
وَقَدand indeed قُرِنواthey were matched حينَwhen جَدَّbecame earnest الرِهانُthe race

And when the race became earnest, they were matched
They were paired when the wager intensified
Against a lofty runner, toward the farthest goal.
With Sama to the furthest time

He cuts off their breath with his running,
He cuts off their breath with trotting
With the rein held back, yet never wearied.
With pulling the reins and no tiring
فَإِنّاfor we أُناسٌa people نُحِبُّwe love الوَفاءَfidelity
حِذارَfor fear of الأَحاديثِtalk فيin المَشهَدِthe assembly
For we are a people who love fidelity,
We are people who love loyalty
For fear of talk in the assembly.
Beware of gossip at the station
وَلاand do not نَحتَبيwe bind up our knees عِندَwhen عَقدِconcluding الجِوارِprotection

And we do not bind up our knees when pledging protection
And we do not conceal when pledging alliances
With anything but swords, nor cloak ourselves otherwise.
Except with swords, we do not wear
شَدَدتُمyou tightened حُباكُمyour knee-wraps عَلىfor غَدرَةٍan act of treachery

You tightened your knee-wraps for an act of treachery
You strengthened your love for betrayal
At Jayshan, while the sword was still unsheathed.
With Jayshan and the sword was not sheathed
فَبُعداًso perdition لِقَومٍto a people أَجارواwho sheltered الزُبَيرَal-Zubayr

So perish the people who sheltered al-Zubayr;
So distance to a people who gave refuge to Az-Zubayr
But as for al-Zubayr, may he not perish!
As for Az-Zubayr, he does not distance himself
أَعِبتَdid you disparage فَوارِسَthe horsemen of يَومِthe day of الغَبيطِal-Ghabit

Did you disparage the horsemen of the day of al-Ghabit,
You exhausted the horsemen on the day of Al-Ghabeet
And of the days of Bishr of Banu Marthad,
And the days of Bishr, son of Marthad
وَيَوماًand a day بِبَلقاءَat Balqa' ياO اِبنَson of القُيونِthe smiths

And of a day at Balqa', O son of smiths?
And a day in Balqaa O son of urns
We witnessed the spear-fighting, and you did not.
We witnessed the stabbing and you did not witness
فَصَبَّحنَthen they attacked at dawn أَبجَرَAbjar وَالحَوفَزانَand al-Hawfazan

Then at dawn they struck Abjar and al-Hawfazan
So we left Abjar and Al-Hawfazan
With a fierce onrush against the scouts.
With a fading scent on the plateau
وَيَومَand on the day of البَحيرَينِal-Buhayrayn أَلحَقتَناyou made us catch up

And on the day of al-Buhayrayn you made us catch up;
And the day of the two pools you met us
Theirs were furrows in the rugged upland.
It has ravines in Al-Qarrad

We make swords bite into the heads of kings,
We bite the swords with the fools' zeal
And cure the stiff-necked lord of his pride.
And quench the thirst for hunting the prey
