Ah, greet a dwelling at al-Burdayn; I see none

like a dwelling at Qaww whose traces go ungreeted.

His eyes indeed streamed as he stood

over a ruined campsite, with only its decayed remains left.

We refused, and would hear no reproach concerning Hind,

just as Hind would not heed those who blamed her for us.

Whenever Hind was mentioned to him, his composure faltered,

and the eye's tears poured down in streaming torrents.

Yet how could Hind be his, when barring the way to her stood

watchful eyes and enemies whose missiles were many?

    وَإِن غِبتُ شَفَّ النَفسَ عَنها هُمومُها

    When I visit her, the two watchers bar my way to her;

and when I am away, cares for her wear my soul thin.

I say, as my night swells with remembrance of you:

“Truly, do its stars stand still because of what I suffer?”

I am the defender and protector when they grow fierce—

Yarbu's proud chiefs—and its mighty stallions charge.

Leave others alone: my pride will surely restrain

devils whose accursed one is pelted with copper.

For Mujashi has never equaled us in guarding honor,

nor measured glory against us without our humbling it.

Nor do we take staves of arta wood; rather, our staves

are thin-edged: whoever feels their sting never recovers.

We clothed the sword's edge in Arid's skull

on the morning of al-Liwa, while the horses' wounds bled.

And on the day of Ubayd Allah we plunged in with a banner

and a supporting host, all its Tamim mustered to us.

We have defenders when honor calls, and envoys,

bold leaders whose resolve has never scattered.

When they mount, their horses do not fear terror,

but meet battle wherever we pasture them.

    وَلَكِن صُدورَ الأَزأَنِيِّ نَسومُها

    When they answer the alarm, their horses are not fed alfalfa;

instead we pasture them on the points of Azani spears.

Our spears defended the eastern pulpit,

and the sanctuary of the corners, its Hatim being pelted.

    فَهَلّا غَداةَ الصِمَّتَينِ تُديمُها

    We kindled war against you, its cauldrons boiling;

why did you not sustain it on the morning of al-Simmatayn?

We left you unable to keep faith with Zand, whom you had sheltered,

like a cowrie-wearing woman whose braided cord had snapped.

He has an evil mother; evil is what she has provided him

when the ancient, bygone honors of lineage are counted.

And when baseness covered the space around his nose,

it settled in a dwelling it never leaves.

Have you not seen that I have struck Ibn Fartana

with a crushing blow whose brain-wounded victim cannot hope to live?

Whenever he falls beneath a blow that strikes him,

another blow's hovering threats overshadow him as he awaits it.

The slave hoped for peace with me after he was struck

by its thunderbolts; then its clouds began to pour.

I delighted in the rhymes' flaying of his nose,

and their brands scarred the skin of his brows.

A brand from overwhelming blows shone out, as though they were the

Pleiades, whose stars emerged from clouds.

Will Mujashi give up eating khazir porridge,

when its portion is paltry in everything but khazir?

    وَكانَت غَداةَ الغِبِّ يوفي غَريمُها

    Ibn Fartana will be disgraced and content with a meager share;

and on the morning after, her debtor used to pay in full,

when she descended into the hollow of al-Maragh and halted,

arriving by night, with the tips of udder-pegs for her vineyards.

If Mujashi has backed you in a race,

it has surely suffered loss, and its wits have gone astray.

Whenever I fear contagion from mange, I cure it

with a fierce-burning brand whose dark trace endures.

Do you revile Yarbu so that I will revile Malik,

while another, not you, is Malik's kinsman and true stock?

He has a chestnut mare that has never met a rider

of noble stock, nor borne a rein that could guide her straight.
