فكأنهم أرض وأنت سماء
The poets fell prostrate before the majesty of your verse;
The poets kneeled in reverence for the glory of your poetry
As though they were earth, and you the sky.
As if they were the earth and you were the sky

You were nothing but a blazing star
You were but a blazing star
That fell, plunging downward with a roar.
That fell cascading with clamor

We used to see what your light was doing;
We used to see what your light was doing
So let us wait to see what the darkness will do.
So let us wait to see what the darkness does

برزت تريد لتلمع الحصباء
After pearls whose necklace you used to string,
After your pearl, you used to string its necklace
The pebbles emerged, seeking to glitter.
You emerged wanting to make the pebbles shine

ماء وأخشى أن يجف الماء
Today, in poetry's basin, there remains
Today, your ode remains in its pool
Water—and I fear the water will dry up.
Water, though I fear the water may dry up

And for a time, despite your visibility, you were hidden
You hid from me for a period of time
From my eyes—and some visibility is concealment.
Vanishing from sight after being in view

أعلام مصر وماجت الدأماء
So great was the tragedy of your loss that it shook
Great is your affliction, for it shook
Egypt's banners, and the sea surged.
The symbols of Egypt and stirred the dunes

You hurried along in traveling, O Shauqi, though
Things remained there that you had not said.
You remained there, saying nothing
