on earth run in throngs toward a goal.

O sons of my homeland, the weak are surely impoverished.

O sons of my homeland, the strong surely live in ease.

O sons of my homeland, poverty alone,

when needs press hard, breaks the back.

O sons of my homeland, there is no peace for a nation

if it does not rely on a vast army.

The people are sold and bought in a market

for paltry prices, while the people are unaware.

to itself, like embers—or hotter than embers.

and even union seemed worse than separation.

Then, when we awoke, her phantom had already vanished,

and nothing of it remained with me but memory.
