وسعيٌand striving لإدراكto obtain المعيشةa livelihood متعبُexhausting
Is there, each day, a journey and exile,
Is there a journey every day, and exile,
and exhausting toil to earn a living?
And a painful striving to attain livelihood?

Souls ran rampant in their error and hastened
Souls overflowing in their ignorance hastened
toward evil—their deeds are caprice and fanaticism.
To evil, their desires and prejudice impelled them.

And I have no fault in their eyes, except that I
What was my crime in their eyes but that
went where no one else goes.
I went where none but I would go?

If championing knowledge is a sin one is punished
If triumph of knowledge be a crime punished,
for, then I call God to witness: I am guilty.
Then, by God, I admit guilt.

And many a one among them smiles when present,
How often, when one of them was present
but whenever he is away from you, he scowls [reading an apparent typo as 'absent'].

His outward manner was cordial when he feared your might,
He showed his true self, fearing your power face to face
but neither his inner self nor what lay hidden was pure.
His secret self he would not show, the hypocrite.
لقدindeed نسبونيthey accused me للضلالof going astray لأننيbecause I

They have indeed accused me of going astray because I
They accused me of heresy because
differ from them in what I say and write.
My words and writings disagreed with them.

And had I sided with them in ignorance,
Had I echoed their ignorance
I would have been credited with goodness and sound judgment.
I would have been credited with goodness and wisdom.

And they said, 'You have spoken falsehood.' I said, 'Rather, the one
They said I lied but I replied, "The real liar
who promotes delusions is closer to falsehood.'
Is he who urges illusions, nearer lying."

If one who has accorded with the truth is a liar,
If he who agrees with truth be called a liar,
then one who has opposed the truth is a greater liar.
Then he who disagrees with truth is a greater liar.
أبىwould not allow اللَهGod أنthat أنسىI forget ربوعاًdwellings كريمةnoble
قضيتI spent بهاin them عهدthe days of الصباyouth وهوand it was طيّبpleasant
God would not have me forget noble dwellings,
God forbid that I forget dear meadows
where I spent the days of youth, and sweet they were.
Where I spent the bright days of my youth.

It is the home that fastened cords of love to me,
The abode that bound my heart with ties of love
with which it pulls my sorrowful heart and draws it.
That drag at my sad heart and pull it along.

May God bless a time in al-Rusafa that has passed,
God guard the covenant I made at Rusafa
but it does not fade from my mind.
Though it has passed, from my mind it fades not.

Ah, if only I knew: will I see myself returning
Ah, would that I knew! Shall I e'er go back
to it, and will I drink from the water of the Tigris?
And drink again of the water of Dijla?
