    بأئمة الادب الصميم

    Iraq cried out in welcome

    to the masters of genuine literature,

  2. بالرافعي علم الهدى

    في جو جامعة العلوم

    to al-Rafi‘i, the banner of guidance,

    in the skies of the university of sciences,

  3. بالعبقرية بالهدى

    بممثلي مصر الرؤم

    to genius, to guidance,

    to the representatives of tender-hearted Egypt,

  4. بالنور يهدي المشرقين

    الى الصراط المستقيم

    to the light that guides the two Easts

    to the straight path.

  5. مصر تبث كواكبا

    اكبر بمصر من سديم

    Egypt sends forth stars—

    how great a nebula Egypt is!

  6. ما مصر الا مصدر الا

    نوار حتى في القديم

    Egypt is nothing but a source of

    light, even in ancient times.

  7. ان العراق شقيق مصر

    على نزوح في النخوم

    Iraq is indeed Egypt's brother,

    despite the distance between their frontiers;

  8. فيبثها آلامه

    بث الكليم الى الكليم

    and so he confides his pains to her,

    as the wounded confide in the wounded.

  9. في الشرق اشجى مشهد

    عطف الهضيم على الهضيم

    The most poignant sight in the East:

    the oppressed one's tenderness toward the oppressed.

  10. رب السماء وقاهما

    من كل شيطان رجيم

    May the Lord of heaven protect them both

    from every accursed devil.

  11. النيل زار الرافدين

    يريهما عطف الحميم

    The Nile has visited the Two Rivers,

    showing them both a close friend's affection.

  12. اكرم بوفد كلهم

    طاو على قلب سليم

    How noble a delegation, every one of them

    enfolding a pure heart!

  13. جمعتهم الايام في

    بغداد كالعقد النظيم

    The days have brought them together in

    Baghdad, like a finely strung necklace.

  14. بلقائهم فرجت ما

    في غور نفسي من هموم

    Meeting them dispelled whatever

    cares lay in the depths of my soul.

  15. اني على كبري اخف

    الى اللقاء من النسيم

    Despite my age, I am lighter of step

    toward the meeting than the breeze.
