بكيتI wept ولكنand yet لاnot بكاءweeping الغمائمthe clouds
ونحتُand I lamented ولكنand yet لاnot نواحlamentation الحمائمِthe doves
I wept, but not as the clouds weep;
I wept, but not the weeping of clouds,
And I lamented, but not as the doves lament.
And I lamented, but not the laments of doves.
فإنfor indeed بكائيmy weeping عنfrom هوىًlove متحكمٍovermastering
وإنand indeed نواحيmy lamentation عنfrom غرامٍpassionate love ملازمever-present
For my weeping springs from an overmastering love,
For my crying is ruled by passion,
And my lamentation from a passion that never leaves.
And my wailing by clinging love.
وماand not لغماfor a cloud (apparently لغمام) ماطرraining عينan eye مغرمa lover
وماand not لحمامfor a dove هادرcooing قلبa heart هائمone lost in love
And no raining cloud has a lover's eye,
No rain cloud weeps for a love-struck one,
And no cooing dove has the heart of one lost in love.
No mournful dove for a yearning heart.

And can their weeping help those who weep in sorrow,
Of what use to the weepers is their weeping,
If, in love, it finds no compassionate heart?
If, in love, they find no tender heart?

And how can I fear fate or dread death,
How can I fear fate or dread calamity,
When I have sought refuge from time's vicissitudes with a protector?
When I have, against the vicissitudes of Time, a guardian?
